Hello crochet fans...... to get through the winter well protected, you need a good hat, a scarf or cowl, and maybe something for your hands too...... you can make all of this wonderfully yourself, so grab your hook and crochet this great zebra set consisting of a hat, cowl, and muff - the hat is also available as its own pattern, of course ...

I made this set for my children, and my glove-refuser especially loves the muff; he likes putting his hands in it, and they stay wonderfully warm.

here for the hat        and     here for the complete set: hat, cowl, and muff

A muff for someone who refuses to wear gloves—that’s really cute. He probably wouldn’t want to wear wrist warmers, would he? You could pull them forward so they leave the fingers free but keep everything else warm. I think a sweater for adults—or of course for children too—would be a nice way to round things off, but I think that’s a lot of work, a pattern for a whole sweater.

I’d already tried making wrist warmers, and he didn’t want those either :) He really loves the muff, though.... that’s just how it is with kids :)

I wouldn’t really dare try a sweater pattern, at least not for kids—I’m a bit intimidated by that

Well, as long as his hands stay nice and warm with the muff, he can do without wrist warmers and gloves.
What’s so hard about a pattern for a sweater? I’m a beginner and not a seller, so I have no idea where the difficulties lie. I’ve never crocheted a sweater before because it’s just too difficult for me as a beginner. Are you talking about attaching the sleeves? I mean, you can definitely crochet the cuffs on the sleeves and the neckline just fine using single crochet, and then work the front and back in rows—or even crochet the whole thing in the round. And the sleeves are kind of like a tube, so you could probably crochet them in the round, adding or decreasing stitches depending on whether you start at the top or the bottom. At least, that’s how I picture it. But honestly, I have absolutely no practical experience with it.

By the way, a completely different question:
what’s that foot sack called that you can slip both feet into when you want to stay nice and warm in front of the TV or something? Do you know roughly what I mean? Like a big, sewn-together slipper, but just one for both feet, lined with fleece or something. I don’t think there’s anything like that in the shop yet.

Hey there, Muetzekatze! I’ve already crocheted sweaters and jackets for my daughter (and for my son and myself, too). It’s not hard to do, but I find that with children’s clothing in particular, writing a pattern is difficult because kids’ proportions can vary so much even if they wear the same clothing size..... With store-bought clothes, it’s not as noticeable if a shirt is a little bigger than the child’s proportions, or you can try on regular store-bought items and exchange them if necessary—or just not buy them, etc.

With handmade items—meaning when you make them yourself—you spend forever working on them. Just imagine if I were to write a pattern and then a mom spent days or even weeks working on it, only to find out it doesn’t fit—because it’s too tight or way too loose. On top of that, there’s the factor of how tightly or loosely someone crochets… And the risk of having an unhappy crafter sitting there because the sweater doesn’t fit her child—I don’t want to put myself through that; it would really break my heart..... I can make things like this for my own kids over and over again since I can try them on, but I’d only risk writing a pattern if I had 10 model kids I could try things on again and again—but I don’t... and that’s why I have huge respect for patterns like these....

Here’s another example: My son currently wears size 80/86 because he’s 84 cm tall, but he’s very slim (he was a preemie), and there are some clothes I can’t put on him because he just gets lost in them.... When my daughter was that small, she was also pretty slim, but not as extreme as my son. For summer clothes, size 74 fits him better than 80/86, but with long-sleeved tops and long pants, size 74 naturally leaves his pants and sleeves too short, and that looks silly

***************

I know what you mean about the footmuff, but I can’t think of the name right now... I’ve seen something like that for couples, too, where four feet fit inside

Hello,
I have a question for the designers here in the forum or in this thread. Do you actually wear the clothes you’ve made yourselves? Just in everyday life or only on special occasions? I imagine it must be very pleasant to be able to design clothes according to your own wishes. Clothes like pants, jackets, and the like—not just gloves and scarves. During my time here on the forum and on the Facebook page of crazypatterns, I’ve somehow gotten the impression that most people’s non-professional crafting tends to focus more on amigurumi and accessories and less on clothing. Clothing is probably also harder for people without much experience to make themselves. That’s why I’m asking the pros here how you handle it.
Happy New Year! Best regards, Sidney

Hi. Of course I wear it myself, for any occasion that suits it. I’ve crocheted stoles, shirts, vests, a coat, and a dress for myself. I even made my husband a traditional jacket. But because of the kids, I tend to wear those more outside of everyday life. So I don’t need chocolate stains or anything like that on the wool.

Do other people actually ask you about these handmade garments?

Yes. Sometimes. Just the other day in the ENT doctor’s waiting room

A cozy, warm shawl that wraps around you and warms you like a good friend, accompanying you through cool fall and winter days—that is "Mellon".
The unusual shape makes it wonderfully comfortable to wear. Because the shawl is knitted almost entirely in knit stitches, it’s perfect for working on while watching TV. It’s also very well suited for using up leftover yarn.

Muffs are pretty, but impractical after all.

In weather like this, a warm, stretchy headband is simply the best.
