...in this hot, humid weather? Is crocheting better than knitting when your hands get sweaty?
How about you? What do you do when your hands get sweaty?
Well, I prefer to crochet and always have a damp washcloth handy next to my crochet project.
Have a wonderful weekend, and
best regards from Chiemgau
Traudelina
I was in the woods today, splashing my feet in the stream, and took a few photos while I was at it. I’m not really in the mood for crafts right now. Supposedly, it’ll be cooler on Sunday.
Temperature-wise, it’s more like spring here in the Hochtaunus.
But the humidity is almost at thunderstorm levels again.
I don’t have the problem of sweaty hands.
Still, I find it annoying that the yarn doesn’t glide as smoothly over the needles (both knitting needles and crochet hooks).
Sometimes my hands start to sweat, too, but it’s not too bad.
When nothing else works, the only solution is to take a break and wash my hands.
I really should start working on the winter collection soon, but working with thick yarns right now?
I’d rather not ;-)
Thank you so much for your comments.
Well, my customers complain that with sweaty hands, nothing slides anymore. I also think that washing your hands can help. Other than that, I don’t know of any alternatives.
I mainly use my wet washcloth for my forehead and neck—to cool off. Then I can go back to crocheting until the hook glows… grin. When it’s cooler out, knitting is more relaxing for me. Is it the same for you?
Definitely.
But it mustn't be too cold. Especially in winter, my fingers are often cold, and then they're so stiff that I really have trouble knitting or crocheting smoothly.
The sweet spot is somewhere in between: 20–25 degrees, indoors as well as outdoors. :-)
Yeah, exactly—20 to 25 degrees is the ideal temperature.
I think nothing slips anymore; it’s not just about the heat, but also the humidity. It often works pretty well at higher temperatures, but right now, there’s no chance. But washing your hands frequently does help a little.
Come up north :-)
Your eyes can relax as you gaze out at the North Sea, your hands won’t sweat (it’s too windy for that), and you’ll be protected from too much sun in a beach chair.
There are also delicious fish rolls.
Today we went hiking in the mountains again—even at over 2,000 meters, it was still hot and humid, and everything was sticking to my skin. Luckily, it was cooler on the train, so I was able to crochet a few more rows on my dishcloth. I feel the same way as Traudelina: Crocheting is more pleasant now, but when the weather’s cooler, I almost prefer knitting—according to the forecast, Sunday should be just the day for that again!
@Ute. Thanks so much for your northern breeze—I think it’ll take until tomorrow to reach us here in Bavaria—maybe it spent the night
@Petra: in Baden-Württemberg—grinnnssss
Generally speaking, we can probably all agree that it’s definitely related to the humidity. I once went on vacation to Turkey (Bodum) and put on a jacket when it was 30°C in the shade—I couldn’t believe it! And inland near the salt terraces, it was at least 50°C, which I could handle—all because it was dry heat!
@Michaela and others—yes, 20°C to 25°C is my favorite temperature too, as long as it’s not muggy :-)
At least in winter you can turn up the heat. I’ll have to try whether I can do needlework with fingerless gloves when my fingers get cold...
Yeah, Traudelina, it’s pretty much the same for me. With this heat here in Bavaria ;-) I prefer crocheting too, and I’ve already almost finished a new project. My UFOs, though, are knitting projects with thicker yarn. Phew… those would be too warm for me right now. I’m already sweating just looking at them.
I took some photos of my new project yesterday—in the garden. Sweat kept dripping from my face onto the camera—it was really annoying having to watch out for that.
Generally, I prefer knitting, but I’ve also discovered my love for crocheting. Cotton is easy to work with even in the summer.
I don’t have any problems with wet hands. I could imagine that maybe a little powder might help?
On the topic of "What to do?" I have another question for you "old hands":
Is it worth posting something new now during vacation month? Will it even be seen? Or should I wait a little longer? What do you think, and how do you handle it?
