I often find that when it comes to crafts, people tend to lump you into the “quirky seniors” category (knitting and crocheting are for grandmas)
But when I was crocheting an amigurumi, a friend of my daughter’s peeked into the living room and asked, “What are you doing there?” When I told her I was crocheting a unicorn, she said, “Cool—my mom can’t do something that awesome!”
For the first time, I was truly happy to have such a “quirky” hobby.
I recently had the chance to publish a crochet pattern as an author in the current issue of “Häkeln for you,” and there was even a two-page interview about me! I was—and still am—totally happy! You don’t get an opportunity like that all that often! :)
What makes me happiest is that my son’s friends—who are all over 10 now and super cool and laid-back—would much rather ask me for a little crocheted animal from me than anything else. And they’re all boys. One of them already has a collection of cats at home and has said that his next one has to be a cat again.
And for my daughter’s friend’s last birthday, I made a little guardian angel.
Her mom mentioned it to me a few days later. She’d received so many gifts, but that evening when she went to bed, she had to take the little angel with her, and she said it was the loveliest thing she’d gotten for her birthday.
It makes me so happy because kids are always honest, and in today’s world of Nintendo and Fillies, it’s even more special to receive something homemade.
Another lovely moment was when I made a shawl for my son’s teacher as a farewell gift when he was changing schools. She couldn’t say a word—she just had tears in her eyes.
What made me happiest was that my grown-up son asked me to knit him a raccoon for a specific reason. He really liked it and was so happy about it—his eyes were shining.
Now I’m knitting it again and hope to be able to show it here before Christmas.
You’ve all experienced wonderful moments of joy through your crafting. My special moment was when a woman messaged me because she had a question about the Spiralibus hat pattern. What made it special was that she is blind and knits solely by following the words read aloud to her by her screen reader. Since she can’t see pictures, she has to visualize everything in her mind and then feel each stitch as she knits. That really impressed me—and also the fact that she doesn’t let her blindness spoil her enjoyment of crafting, but does what she can. She’s very proud of her hat. And I’m a little proud of myself, too, because it shows that you have to be able to explain things well.
Wow, that’s really touching, what you’ve experienced. I’m so happy for you!
I only started crafting again last winter after many years away from it. My favorite moments since then are always when my son (41) remembers the Norwegian sweaters he loved so much as a child and that I knitted for him. And he’s happy every time I knit for his daughter now. Yes, and the very best moment is when she puts the things on. That’s the absolute highlight for me.
I’ll get to experience that moment this weekend at our 25th wedding anniversary. :-)
