Fair Isle Knitting Patterns

Hi,
Fair Isle is a knitting pattern, right? I recently saw a video on YouTube about it, but I lost the link when I updated Firefox. Is this still popular or trendy today? I had the purely subjective impression that it somehow belongs in the ’80s, but feel free to correct me on that. Besides, when it comes to crafts, it’s all about having fun. I just took another look at Sidney’s thread about the crochet diploma, so I wanted to emphasize that again. ;)

Hello and good morning, Muetzekatze,

I think Fair Isle is totally back in style. With the crafting boom of recent years, these little patterns are making a big comeback too.
By the way, Fair Isle isn’t “a knitting pattern” but rather refers to the knitting technique itself. It actually comes from Fair Isle (one of the Shetland Islands), where it was used to make very thick, warm sweaters from small scraps of wool that could withstand the wind and cold the fishermen there faced. This was achieved by always carrying the threads along on the wrong side. However, since the sweaters had to be finished quickly and were often knitted on the go, only two different colors are ever used in a single row.

Of course, the patterns and styles used to knit Fair Isle today have also become more modern. That’s why I absolutely don’t think Fair Isle belongs in the ’80s. The number of new books on the subject also confirms that these patterns are totally back in style.

I’ve included a few pictures that I absolutely love, and I hope I’ll find the time to knit one of these pieces myself.

Best wishes

Nici...gotta get back to knitting now...= ) ) ) ) ) ) )

@Nici
that’s very kind of you to help muetzekatze with the Fair Isle topic.
However, I’d like to ask you not to upload any images that aren’t yours. Only your own images may be uploaded.
I hope you understand that I’ve replaced both images with the appropriate links.
Have fun knitting
Best regards, Mod Josefa

Thanks, Josefa—unfortunately, it only occurred to me when it was already too late, and then I couldn’t delete it anymore.
I was also going to ask you to delete it again.
The book is mine, though ;-))) but it wasn’t my picture

Many thanks, I hope I remember that in future

You can find beautiful patterns at "Drops" and at Lianestitch

I haven’t tried it yet.
Best, Hilde

Thanks to all of you for your posts here in the thread, and a special thanks to Nici for the info on Fair Isle and all the background details. I didn’t know any of that—I’d only seen that DIY video on YouTube, and it was just about the technique, not the origins, history, or background info. So, if Fair Isle really gets you excited, now’s the perfect time of year for it. Maybe a few more people will catch the Fair Isle bug. The photos and links look really great. It doesn’t look that much like the ’80s anymore—I guess I was mistaken about that.
Thanks also to Bastelhilde for the link to Lianestich. Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with Drops.
In the knitting section at Lianestich, there are things that really leave you speechless—all you can say is “wow.” I can’t knit and probably won’t learn how, but I admire people who are good at it. There’s so much more you can do than just knit stitches and things like that.
Would Fair Isle maybe be something for the shop or for a tutorial or something?
Maybe even more people will like it.

I wish you all a wonderful weekend

Hi muetzekatze,

the company “Drops” that Hilde mentioned is really well known, and I think it’s one of the biggest craft specialists in Europe.
I used the term craft specialists because I couldn’t think of a better one. The company’s headquarters are in Norway, but I think the website is translated into almost every language. The company doesn’t just sell yarn at prices that are really great for the quality. The yarn is also available in many stores in Germany.
There are also countless patterns for almost every area, available online or in booklets.
Plus, there are great video tutorials on a wide variety of topics. It’s really worth taking a look

Best wishes and have a wonderful Sunday

I also like to check out Drops from time to time—the patterns are very easy to follow. I choose designs I like and save them on Drops to make later. They also have lots of crochet patterns and many other things.
Have a lovely day, everyone—everything will be fine. Best regards, Heide
