Hello and good morning, Muetzekatze,
I think Fair Isle is totally back in style. With the crafting boom of recent years, these little patterns are making a big comeback too.
By the way, Fair Isle isn’t “a knitting pattern” but rather refers to the knitting technique itself. It actually comes from Fair Isle (one of the Shetland Islands), where it was used to make very thick, warm sweaters from small scraps of wool that could withstand the wind and cold the fishermen there faced. This was achieved by always carrying the threads along on the wrong side. However, since the sweaters had to be finished quickly and were often knitted on the go, only two different colors are ever used in a single row.
Of course, the patterns and styles used to knit Fair Isle today have also become more modern. That’s why I absolutely don’t think Fair Isle belongs in the ’80s. The number of new books on the subject also confirms that these patterns are totally back in style.

I’ve included a few pictures that I absolutely love, and I hope I’ll find the time to knit one of these pieces myself.
Best wishes
