Hi,
I found this article in Brigitte magazine. I don’t usually read Brigitte, but I stumbled upon it by chance on Facebook.
Do you guys also find that crafting helps clear your mind? I actually just find crafting relaxing.
What I liked about the article, though, was that the woman was able to describe in her own words how she turned her passion into a career that apparently allows her to make a really good living.
But I’ve come to realize that the things you do with passion and love—and that you’re really good at—do pay off.
Quote from the article in the link above.
I like that.
For me, the most fascinating thing about the article was that someone who isn’t exactly a math whiz explained how math and crafts go hand in hand. Because that’s something I’ve been hearing a lot from people around me ever since I started trying to make money with my patterns: “But that has absolutely nothing to do with your actual profession.” I have to say, I have a degree in mathematics and, before I had children, I worked for years as a software developer. And both of those things are somehow related to what I do now, even if it might be hard for many outsiders to understand.
As the woman in the article writes, crocheting and knitting involve a lot of applied mathematics. Not just the rule of three, but also trigonometry and quite a few other things. And software development isn’t all that far removed from it either. After all, what is software development, really? Writing down instructions that a computer can understand, telling it what to do. In a specific language. Structured work instructions. And what are patterns? Nothing else, really. Structured work instructions written in their own language (abbreviations and crochet/knitting charts) so that diligent crafters know how to recreate the designed items.
The key difference between my previous job and my current one is actually that I can now be creative as well. Because that’s rarely possible in software development.
In any case, it’s nice to read a success story—it encourages me in my efforts to perhaps one day be able to make a living from this work as well.
For me, crafting is a bit like “meditation.” Just the counting alone…
1, increase, 1, increase, 1, increase
2, increase, 2, increase .....
9, increase ....
It is, in part, quite a monotonous activity, which nevertheless requires a certain amount of attention.
It helps me clear my head. Simply because I am concentrating on something else.
I don’t hope to ever be able to make a living from it. If it should happen someday ... but I have my justified doubts. In that case, my health would probably put a stop to it first (osteoarthritis in my hands). So I would not want to push building my life around it ...
A very interesting article, by the way.
Best regards,
Petra
The job of an interior stylist was completely new to me—I’d never given any thought to where the decorations in magazine photo spreads come from.
But you never stop learning. Now at least I know who does it, and it’s also nice to know that someone really enjoys it.
Hi everyone
I’m glad you found the article helpful.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed for you that one day you’ll be able to make a living from your creative work.
Sunny Thursday greetings from Sidney
