I just heard something I never would have thought was possible, and I wanted to talk to you all about it.
Apparently, at some children’s carnival parades, adults have been snatching candy right out of kids’ hands after they’ve caught it. Other adults apparently stood directly under the floats with their umbrellas turned upside down, catching the candy before the kids could even get to it—and “of course” didn’t share any.
I’m a little shocked. Have you ever seen anything like this, and how would you react?
Fortunately, I haven’t had to witness that yet—but I can well imagine that it doesn’t happen all that rarely... this—let’s call it—selfish behavior is, unfortunately, becoming more and more rampant,
and not just during Carnival... inconsiderate behavior is increasingly common; “please,” “thank you,” and other small courtesies are now probably more the exception than the rule...
I’m not sure what you can do in a situation like that—from experience, I can only say that
it’s usually hard to reason with people like that; they just get abusive and even think they’re in the right… but I keep trying anyway…
But yesterday at the Rosenmontag parade, we experienced exactly the opposite—I’d put a bag in the stroller for the candy we’d caught. The people behind us asked me to open the bag so they could put the candy they’d caught in with ours.
Hi :)
I’m from a small town where “Fasnet” is celebrated very extensively.
In my experience, both here and in the neighboring towns, the kids have always taken the candy, and it’s always gone fairly smoothly. The adults might get a pretzel, a couple of Landjäger sausages, or a shot of schnapps shoved into their hands...
Everything just as it should be :)
A few years ago, I drove 30 km to a parade, and I could hardly believe it... I experienced exactly the kind of nonsense you’re describing! Even the adults were scrambling for candy and didn’t hesitate to shove a kid aside if something came flying their way! And these weren’t 18-year-olds—they were people in their 40s or older! You can only shake your head at that...
Something else that makes me smile in hindsight: when I was a kid, I was out with four others during a carnival gathering... We were all between 10 and 12... we were looking for an open spot, and suddenly an older woman gave us such a hard time! She was there with her grandson and practically yelled at us, saying we should get lost and not take her grandson’s candy, and that we’d better find another spot. She kept this up for about 15 minutes until we actually left... by then, there weren’t any good spots left...
Thanks for your replies. I usually only know children’s carnival parades to be peaceful, but there are stupid people everywhere.
When I was a little kid, I experienced this myself at a Christmas market. Back then, “Christmas elves” were throwing candy from the awning of a store into the crowd of children. An older man was standing next to me with his umbrella open upward. When I said, “Hey, that’s for us kids,” he snapped at me, “Shut up!” and shoved me so hard that I fell down.
I just can’t understand that kind of thing. Children’s carnival and children’s fun at the Christmas market are meant for kids. As an adult, it wouldn’t even occur to me to snatch a chocolate bar out of a 6-year-old’s hand.
Today, if I saw something like that, I’d probably say out loud, “Stealing from little kids? Are you serious?” in the hope that bystanders would step in...
