Knitted Felted Slippers—Sewing on a Sole?!

Hi everyone,

I hope you can help me.
I really enjoy knitting felted slippers and then felting them in the washing machine.
So far, I’ve always used liquid sock stop on the sole.
Unfortunately, it never really lasts very long for me—a few months at most.

So here’s my question:
Can’t you also sew a leather sole onto the bottom? Like, maybe buy some leather fabric and sew it on or glue it on?! Or do you have any other ideas?

I’d really appreciate your help.

Hi Caro,
Of course you can. I usually do that with my felt slippers.
I have some faux leather (microfiber) here. I cut it to the shape of the sole.
Then I sew the sole on using a leather needle and strong thread (doubled).
It holds up great.

Hi,

I can only agree with the previous post.
However, I don’t cut out custom-fit soles for my daughter; instead, I cut out little hearts or dots, which I then sew onto the bottom of the sole. You can always see them a little when she walks

Hi Caro,
I’ve also sewn leather onto my felt slippers before, but it ended up being too stiff for me.
Now I sew Toughtek onto the soles of all my crocheted shoes. Toughtek is a very thin, but incredibly durable sole material. I especially like it because you can’t feel it when you walk, and it’s also much easier to sew on because it’s so thin.
In case you or anyone else is interested, I order the material here:

Best regards,
Karin

Good morning and thank you so much for your replies.

Karin, could you please send me a direct link to this Toughtek?
I can only find this material at stores outside of Germany (including the one in your link), and €20 for shipping is a bit too much for me ;-)

Best regards, Caro

And may I ask what fabric you use instead of Toughtek?

When I search for “faux leather” and “microfiber” on Google, I get soooo many results :-(

@CaroRo86
I just use faux leather. It’s also more flexible than real leather.

I don’t know what the faux leather (microfiber) is called. But I have so much of it here that I can’t even use it all. I can send you a piece if you reimburse me for the shipping costs.

If you’re interested, please send me a private message.

Caro, unfortunately, Toughtek is really only available for order in the U.S.,
I placed a bulk order there once, and that’ll definitely last me a few years.
I posted the link above—just click on TwoOfAKindSupplies!
Another good alternative is Vibram, which you can order from JoesToes, for example. They have pre-cut soles, but they also offer pieces for you to cut out yourself upon request!
Here’s the link to the shop: JoesToes
Best regards,

Hi Caro
I use leather soles that normally go inside the shoe. My shoes are now 2 years old.
Best regards, Petra

Hi Caro,
there are so-called “slipper soles” available in standard shoe sizes, for example from Regia.

I definitely need to look into this “Toughtek.” My husband always wears holes in his felt slippers after just a short time. They’re quick to make, but it’s still annoying.
