The perfect pattern—what should it be like?

Since we’re always looking to improve, here’s the question:
What would your ideal patterns look like?

Should everything be described in great detail, or would you prefer them to be short and to the point?

Or perhaps two versions: one detailed and one concise for printing?

With as many pictures as possible, or just a few?

What should be included? Material lists, quantity specifications, where to find materials, etc.?

It’s probably impossible to generalize.

“Advanced” crafters might be fine with a short pattern, whereas beginners really need to be walked through the process step by step.

Both—a long version and a short version—would likely be perfect.

It’s hard to say, actually—after many years, a brief one is enough for me. But when I’m trying something new, I’m grateful for a detailed pattern with pictures.
So it’s not something you can answer with just a simple yes or no.
Best regards, Hilde

For me, the perfect pattern would be one that includes all the necessary information, so that I don’t have to look anything up elsewhere—whether it’s techniques, material information, or anything else. Of course, that depends on the complexity of the pattern and the buyer’s experience level.

Good pictures are a must, of course.
Material specifications, quantity details, sources for materials, and other relevant information should be clearly presented.

A short version and a long version would be great, of course, but I do think that would be extra work for you.

I like patterns that are laid out like reference books or instruction manuals.
In other words, there should be a clear concept behind them. Formatting should be used, and things like that. Important points should be highlighted in bold or perhaps even boxed. Tips should stand out. Potential problems that might come up during the process should be addressed from the outset, with appropriate help provided right away.

So, I don’t think there’s a single answer to this question in this thread that applies to every buyer.
But if you give the pattern to one or more people to test before selling it and ask for feedback, you may still be able to clear up any ambiguities. And I think that when you sell patterns, you learn as you go and gain more and more experience over time. And you can also learn from the experience of other shop owners.

If I wanted to sell patterns, I’d buy the ones that have generated the most sales and
then take a detailed look at how each one is structured.

Of course, the pattern doesn’t have to be perfect.
A good pattern should be easy to understand and easy to follow.
I agree with Muetzekatze’s points, especially regarding formatting, layout, pictures, and taking cues from reference books and pattern booklets.
For patterns aimed at advanced users, techniques no longer need to be explained; for advanced users, the patterns can certainly be a bit more challenging.
