Have you ever heard of a knitting cinema
, or have you even been to one?
A while back, I saw a report about it on N3. People get together to crochet or knit at the movie theater while watching a film. The lights are dimmed so you can still see what you’re doing. Some people even wear their craft lamps around their necks.
It’s a great way to meet new people and talk about your hobby.
Hey! Yeah, I’ve heard about it and seen it on TV, too. To me, that’s complete nonsense—I’m not going to pay for a movie that I won’t actually be able to enjoy. Going to the movies is definitely too expensive for that!
You can organize get-togethers—you get to meet new people there, too! I think that’s much nicer than being in a movie theater where everyone actually wants to watch the movie.
Anyone who wants to knit or crochet should just meet up at a cozy café!
I’ve never heard of this before. It wouldn’t be my thing, either. I’m a connoisseur and a perfectionist. I always focus on exactly one thing at a time and enjoy it fully. Either I immerse myself in the movie and its plot, OR I concentrate on my craft in good lighting. For me, the two don’t go together.
I’ve heard about this several times now—for example, in Berlin and Mainz. However, I immediately ruled it out for myself: either I watch a movie intently—especially since the ticket isn’t exactly cheap—or I focus on my needlework with the best possible lighting. For me, doing needlework in a group would also mean chatting with each other. How is that supposed to work in a movie theater?
Woolly greetings,
Irene
I saw that report too, and yes, I’d try it out right away. I often have a movie playing while I’m crocheting—it works great for me (as long as it’s not a super fiddly pattern). And since everyone there is like-minded, I’m sure we could chat a bit—just like we sometimes do at home while watching a movie.
That’s what I do, too, Veronika. I’ve knitted lots of dishcloths while watching TV.
I could definitely see how you’d meet people there who you could get together with just to do some crafts.
The closest knitting cinema to us is almost 70 km away. You can’t get there without a car.
I saw the cinema thing on Facebook. I thought it was a great idea, but it was too far from my home—you still have to get back home after a movie, after all.
If it were here in the area, I’d definitely check it out.
The train idea is also great; I like it. You get to meet new like-minded people and get out of the house. Combined with the Deutschlandticket—great idea. I can imagine that a lot of friendships could definitely form that way. Here online, it’s getting harder and harder to meet up and do things together because the distances are often too great, which I think is a real shame.
I’ll come clean. 😊
A while back, there was one right in my neighborhood.
They were showing a movie called “Wunderschöner,” which was easy to follow. The dimmed lights worked well, and no one chatted during the movie.
From previous knitting meetups, I already knew not to bring any complicated projects. That way, I can knit without having to look at my work the whole time.
Before the event, there was a cup of coffee and cookies in the lobby. It was a great chance to strike up conversations and make new connections if you wanted to.
A yarn shop offered special yarn and also these craft lamps...
We received small gifts and some promotional material, including information about knitting meetups in the area.
The whole event cost €11.
I thought it was very well done. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it.
Yeah, here in Kiel, the craft store “Wolle & Wunder” organizes these events all the time—I think it’s a great idea: sitting in a room full of people knitting and crocheting while watching a movie on the side 🥰🧶🧶🧶😃👍
They also host knitting get-togethers by the sea 👍😃
I haven’t made it yet—but it’s on my list!
