Dear Users, Dear Authors,
I read in a product description that the pattern in question is also suitable for those getting back into knitting. Does this refer to people who haven’t knitted in a while and need to get back into the swing of things? Do you lose your knitting skills if you don’t knit for a long time?
Generally speaking, you don’t really forget how to knit, but some of the finer points do tend to slip your mind if you don’t keep at it. So, a simple knit-and-purl scarf will still come out right even after a 20-year break, but a jacket with various cable patterns and buttonholes probably won’t be quite as easy to tackle right away.
I also get messages from time to time from “people getting back into knitting” when they have a question about a pattern. Recently, I had a woman from Canada who wanted to knit the Andrea hat from my shop for her daughter—after a 30-year hiatus from knitting.
She followed the pattern step by step, just as it was written, but felt a little unsure due to her lack of knitting practice. I explained the step to her again and included a close-up photo. Then everything was clear to her, and she was able to continue knitting with confidence. She actually already knew how to do it, but she was unsure. Most of the time, people returning to knitting just need a little encouragement and maybe a gentle nudge—then their old skills come back.
By the way, she knitted a really great hat for her daughter… and immediately cast on another one for herself.
Oh look at that, dear Ina. I had no idea you named a pattern after me *laughs*.
I really missed that, since I usually look for crochet patterns. But thank you.
I’m what you might call an occasional knitter. Basic stitches come easily to me. I used to even knit little cable patterns, using a toothpick as a helper needle. Whether I could manage that again today is questionable. I’d have to ask Mr. Google first. Even with color changes (knitted pictures). No idea how I did that. These days I prefer crocheting, even though I like knitted items much better and they feel nicer, too.
Like I said, basic stitches are no problem, but with difficult lace and openwork patterns, I have to really dig in.
Otherwise, you can always get kind help here on the forum.
Once you’ve learned something, it stays with you—even after a long time, it’s tucked away in some corner of your mind.
When I was in school, I knitted a lot for my little sisters. Then I switched to crocheting and didn’t knit for a long time.
Eventually, I started making socks, sweaters, and ponchos, and since I’ve been with CP, I’ve made lots of dishcloths (including for curtains, etc.) and blankets.
The cable patterns from back then probably don’t come as easily anymore, but I could still manage them if I tried.
