Dear users and authors,
do you have any experience with bamboo yarn—that is, yarn containing bamboo viscose or even bamboo fibers spun directly into the yarn?
I haven’t worked with bamboo yarn myself yet, but your question, Josefa, has piqued my curiosity. Master Google confirmed with these explanations what I had suspected:
Bamboo processed into yarn is, in reality, nothing more than viscose with all its positive and negative characteristics.
Okay, now that I’ve read the comments above, I don’t really want to say much more about the properties or authenticity of bamboo yarn.
I certainly can’t claim to know any better.
But I’ve worked with bamboo yarn many times and would still like to share my experience.
I’ve found it to be extremely fine and soft, and I enjoy working with it.
I accidentally washed a bamboo top in the washing machine, and it didn’t warp or shrink at all.
However, my mother found that her hand-knitted sweater completely warped and stretched out when she hand-washed it.
I’ve already crocheted and knitted with it.
It’s very soft, comfortable to wear, and works up beautifully.
It also looks great because it gives a very nice, even stitch definition.
I really enjoy working with this yarn—one of my designs is made from it—and I highly recommend it.
I don’t have anything against viscose in principle (not that I want this to be misunderstood...) - it’s found in many yarn blends and gives the final product a subtle sheen.
Just a few notes on viscose:
- The raw material for the viscose process is cellulose.
- In successive process steps, the pulp is treated with caustic soda to produce a viscose spinning solution.
- The chemical composition of viscose fibers is similar to that of cotton.
I’m just always very skeptical of advertising (and right now, it’s really hyping bamboo as the fiber of the future). In a Google search, I found corn listed as a component in yarns and assume the situation is very similar there.
I’ve also worked with a cotton-bamboo yarn before. I made a Tunisian-crocheted pillowcase that’s wonderfully soft yet still holds its shape quite well.
I knitted a sweater with an intricate pattern using this yarn. I always wash it in the washing machine on the wool cycle and then lay it over the drying rack to dry. It’s been no problem at all, and it hasn’t warped at all.
It doesn’t shed, it’s soft to wear, and it was great to work with.
