How do I get a sewing pattern??

A piece of clothing you sew yourself should fit well afterward and not just hang on you like a sack.
I got some Harris Tweed from my husband, and I’d like to sew a blazer-style jacket out of it. I’ve been scouring the internet on and off since Saturday, searched through my own stash, and haven’t found anything that matched what I had in mind. Then it occurred to me: you still have that light-colored jacket in the closet—you can’t wear it anymore anyway because it’s no longer presentable. So I grabbed it, slipped it on, and checked if the cut worked—and it did! :-) So I grabbed my seam ripper and took the jacket apart—I didn’t have to take it all the way apart, since I just needed one sleeve, the collar, the back piece, and a front piece. Done and done—this morning I laid the pieces out on pattern paper, traced them, and cut them out, so I had the pattern I’d envisioned. I marked the grainline and the notches, because even a seamstress can’t do without them :-)

Best, Inge

Yeah, I’ve done that before too, Inge—with an undershirt. I used that pattern to sew an undershirt out of a T-shirt. It worked great.

My son had to do this for his studies. He’s studying textile design to become a teacher.
At the end of the semester, the students showcased their work in an exhibition. There were some really lovely pieces on display.

I did this once with a pirate shirt in sewing class.
But without taking it apart. It’s a little more tedious, but it works.
Place the piece you want to copy on a large sheet of paper. Pin it down if possible and lightly trace the outlines without seam allowances. You just have to do this separately for each part—sleeve, cuff, yoke, front, and back, etc.
Don’t forget: pay attention to darts, pleats, and the like. It’s easier without darts. For pleats and such, just measure them.
It might get a little wobbly. Just trace the lines neatly. Don’t forget the labels.

Under the guidance of my amazing sewing teacher Anna, it worked out great.😀

Well, I think this is only for experts. I tried this once with a summer dress made of jersey. Since jersey is stretchy and the dress had been worn until the fabric was threadbare, it was naturally stretched out. That’s why I couldn’t trace the pattern anymore. With a firm, sturdy fabric, though, I imagine it would be doable.

Best regards, Ina
