I’ve already uploaded two fall patterns and am currently working on a third. They’re mostly small projects, though. It’s really too hot for bigger projects. But that’s supposed to change in the next few days.
Halloween? It actually has Celtic origins. It first appeared in Germany in 1991. At the beginning of that year, the Iraq War was in full swing, and people thought it would be in poor taste to celebrate boisterously, so Carnival was canceled. To keep the Carnival industry from being stuck with unsold products, they launched a massive advertising campaign for Halloween in the fall—with success, as you can see.
So Halloween didn’t exist here when I was growing up, which is why I don’t really get into it. But my grandchildren love Halloween; they have a lot of fun with it and look forward to it for weeks in advance. And I don’t want to spoil that for them. (They’re always asking me to make decorations and costumes for them, too.)
I, too, grew up in a generation that didn’t celebrate Halloween (though I’m sure I would have loved it as a kid). Now I don’t really care about it, but I do like the slightly different, more unique fall decorations. So I’ll have a few spiders and pumpkins, ghosts, and bats around too.
I just can’t get into Carnival at all, and that can be a bit tricky when you move to Cologne.... 🤣
I’m already crocheting some fall decorations to go with my many pumpkins from last year.

I like Halloween—especially together with my grandson. We’ll see if there are any decorations for it this year.

Last year, I got to sew the pirate hat for him and help with his costume—here he’s wearing his uncle’s jacket and shirt, which his uncle wore back then for his First Communion.
I’m from the Rhineland—Aachen, to be exact. So I grew up with Carnival from the very start. 🤠
That’s why Halloween won me over right away when it first started here.
I love it when the kids come to the door and I have tons of candy ready for them. The little ones are especially cute.

Why not have fun dressing up and celebrating?!
I wish everyone a wonderful fall 🍂🍁🍂
Warm regards, Karoline
As for Halloween, I agree with Inge. I’m not into scary costumes and frightening people—even if it’s just for fun. I do think dressing up for Carnival is great, though; I loved it even as a child.
I’ve actually already knitted and designed some fall clothing. My granddaughter asked for a sleeved scarf, and she’ll be getting it when we visit.
Scaring people—especially older teens or adults—isn’t really a thing here, nor are those over-the-top pranks; I’ve only ever seen those on the news.
Here, it’s just a few kids running around—cute little witches and funny little skeletons—which I think is really sweet. And then there’s the matching decor, which is a bit “spookier” than the usual fall or Thanksgiving decor—though most ghosts and bats are actually more cute than scary.
I like Halloween; I put up a little decoration on the door so the kids know they can ring the doorbell here. That’s worked well for us. It’s better to skip houses that don’t have anything.
We started celebrating Halloween here when my youngest kids were little. Of course, they were really excited about it. I always went along with them to make sure everything went smoothly. And that’s still how almost everyone does it today. The kids are all dressed up in great, cute costumes. Almost all of them are very polite, and many recite a poem. At 8 p.m., the lights go out and we don’t open the door anymore. Anyone who causes a ruckus gets a stern talking-to. But that’s only happened once in all these years…
For years, I’ve been participating in an autumn/Halloween blog hop, and I’m currently working on something for it. It’s always a lot of fun. Each blog features something—recipes, poems, or a short pattern. It’s always a lot of fun.
Best regards, Marita
