What did your first amigurumi look like?

I was in my daughter’s room and stumbled upon my first amigurumi. Every time I see it, I can’t help but smile—back then, a good three years ago, a lot went wrong. But my daughter really wanted a unicorn. So I went on YouTube and searched. The pattern was in English—not really a problem. I headed to the store and bought some yarn without having a clue about yarn types or hook sizes. The yarn was for a size 10 hook! Of course, the unicorn turned out huge and took a ton of stuffing. In total, it weighs about 1–1.5 kg. Looking back now, I think it’s absolutely hideous, but my daughter loves it.

The funny thing is, if you set it upside down, it looks like an ugly troll!

Looking at the second picture, I thought it looked more like a snowman with red feet/hands and a beard :D But other than that, it turned out pretty cute ;) I think it’s totally adorable.

My first amigurumi was a Yoda (Star Wars) that I made almost two years ago because I was sick and bored out of my mind... That was the first time I’d crocheted since elementary school...

None of the people I showed it to (Star Wars fans!) recognized him as Yoda... And the little arms were a total disaster! Oh, and not to mention... I had no idea about stuffing back then, so I just used cotton pads :D

Let’s see if I can dig up a picture... Otherwise, I’ll make one... Despite its extreme ugliness, it’s sitting in the display case in my living room next to my Simpsons and my Pokémon :)

For me, it was four years ago; my daughter also really wanted a "pony with a horn," as she called it.
My problem back then was that the yarn was much too thin, so of course the stuffing (I’d taken it from an old cushion) was bulging out everywhere. Plus, it still looks like a horse that’s been on a crash diet.
But she still loves it, and it still has to sleep in her bed every night (next to all the other animals that have been added since then).

Hi there,

my first “amigurumi” was a penguin—almost 6 years ago, when I finally “dared” to pick up a crochet hook again (I used to crochet a lot as a child, but then stopped at some point).
The yarn was actually far too thick, especially for the details like the feet and beak. But my son thought it was great and still likes it today...maybe I’ll get my hands on it someday, and then I’ll show it to you.

Best, Nina

P.S.: I think the unicorn is pretty too...okay, maybe a bit big and heavy, but if you say “that’s how it’s supposed to be,” then it’s all fine! Especially if your daughter loves it!

When I first started crocheting, the word “amigurumi” didn’t even exist here yet. ;-)
Back then, I crocheted lots of dolls and teddy bears. At some point, my interests shifted to shawls and I focused more on knitting than crocheting.
Until I rediscovered my love for it.
My first “return-to-amigurumi” project was a little elephant based on MrsEmonessy’s pattern.
It sits on the shelf above the TV, so I can look at it every day. :-)

My first amigurumi, six years ago, was a hideously ugly cat from a crochet book.
It was crocheted in back-and-forth rows, so the stuffing just poured right out of it!
And that’s when I designed my very first cat :-)
And now that I think back on it, it was hideously ugly too :-))))

I crocheted my first little devil like this 1.5 years ago… I followed a pattern from a magazine and almost dislocated my fingers, since I’d only ever knitted for years—or occasionally crocheted café curtains—and I’d never liked single crochet stitches, not even back in school. The little devil did turn out quite cute and has a place of honor in my daughter’s room, but whenever I see it, I can’t help but grin… I’d do a lot of things differently today :-)

My first amigurumi? Goodness, that must have been 6–8 years ago. Back then, my brother actually wanted to learn how to crochet, and I found the “Crochet Monsters” set from Kosmos online. My mom ordered it, but my brother still hasn’t touched it to this day ;) So I tried making a cactus—it was crocheted in rows.
About two years later, using that row-by-row technique, I developed my owl pattern because I still couldn’t crochet in the round, which I needed for the eyes. So I quickly watched some videos and learned how to do it, and just like that, my first pattern was finished. Once I could crochet in the round, the frog keychain followed a few years later—just for fun.

But there was really only one reason I wanted to learn how to crochet properly: this wonderful booklet called 70 Funny Crochet Animals. My grandma had been given it over 20 years ago by an acquaintance who couldn’t manage the patterns. And for all those years, whenever I was at Grandma’s, I would leaf through it and beg her to make those animals for me. She always said they were too difficult for her, though probably only because that acquaintance had said so. Well, last year I made the first 7 from this booklet. That really showed my grandma, lol! I’d wanted those animals for over 20 years and never got them, so I just had to make them myself.

I “stole” my first stuffed toy from my mom when I was 1 or 2 years old. My grandma had knitted it for her for a school trip when she was 10. Well, my little lamb is almost 40 years old now, has been sewn back together all over, and I still love it. <3 After that came a few more knitted sheep made by Grandma and a unicorn—I love them all!

My first amigurumi came into the world about 2 years ago ;) It was a little dog from the book Wollowbies. Looking back, it was really fiddly work—those little spots and the little tail—not easy at all. But the biggest problem back then was keeping the stitches even, and doing the increases and decreases. That resulted in some lovely little craters on the head, and the stuffing came right out :D And the worst part: I actually gave it away like that. Although it was well received—people probably just didn’t have the nerve to tell me the harsh truth, lol. Anyway, I’ve been hooked on amigurumi ever since.

The only thing I find a shame is that I still seem to have my share of problems even today... I bought a pattern for a turtle somewhere else, but unfortunately I can’t get it right... Either the pattern is flawed or I’m overcomplicating things...

The two owls were my first amigurumi animals. Then came the chick, and my masterpiece was the octopus. The lion was meant to be a hand puppet for children and was crocheted using only single crochet stitches. All of these animals were sent to children in Senegal (Africa).

That was my first one. I think it was late 2012. Well, considering I made it without any pattern, just from a picture.

I just wanted to show my first amigurumi (picture), and now I’ve ruined the whole forum. Sorry, this is so embarrassing.
