The ideal length of a pattern

I, too, check out the comments on Facebook every now and then. People aren’t just complaining about the price anymore—they also complain when the pattern is too long and uses up too much paper or ink when printed. I can understand the latter, but shouldn’t we actually be happy when the pattern includes lots of tips and details?

Whatever you do...
if it’s explained too briefly, people ask questions or complain
if too much is explained, it uses too much paper

From the very beginning, I decided to make the patterns as detailed as I feel is necessary. No customer has ever complained about that; on the contrary, many less experienced seamstresses are delighted because they understood everything.

And if you find a pattern too detailed, you don’t have to print every page ;-)

Some of the users on Facebook are really nasty. It’s shocking how aggressive they can get, when it’s only about crafts, not about changing the world or political problems. But I’m also a self-confessed softie and like things best when they’re harmonious and without arguments.
I’m careful about printing. In the printer menu, you can specify which pages should be printed and which shouldn’t. That’s practical because you don’t end up with so much paper lying around.

Yes, I’ve often wondered on Facebook what people complain about in public and how they do it. Would they do that face-to-face, too?

And that’s very sensible :-) I don’t print everything out either, because every now and then I buy a pattern myself. Then I’m always glad that I didn’t have to figure it out myself, but can just relax and get started right away with yarn and needles :-)

Really? As a seller, do you buy patterns too?

Oh yes.... I, for one, am the proud owner of every single Heidi Bears pattern :-)
They’re absolutely fantastic, explained really well, and totally creative. I’m happy to spend 6–7 USD per pattern...

Of course, as a writer, you buy other books too :-)

Oh yeah, I sometimes get tempted by the Heidi Bears stuff, too—they’re really awesome!

*swoon* I’m currently crocheting—yet again—her hippo.
Over the weekend, I bought the stegosaurus ^^

Is that where the inspiration for the flower animals came from? ;)

No, to be honest. :-)
I just love these little flowers and have often thought about how I could incorporate them into my own projects.
Someday I’ll try making a whole granny animal too. :-)

Yeah, African Flower is really beautiful. Someday I’ll have to come up with something using that pattern.

I’m curious to see :-)

These little creatures really appeal to me. Unfortunately, I struggle with making a whole animal. It’s truly admirable what Heidi conjures up there … absolutely amazing :-)
