How do you actually crochet with fluffy yarn? Are there any tricks to it? I have trouble finding the stitches in all that fluff, and I can’t crochet blind. Does anyone have any advice?
Cuddly yarn is veeeery hard to crochet with because you just can’t see the stitches. One option is to “feel” your way through the stitches; another is stitches like double crochets, which are naturally larger/taller and therefore easier to “find.”
Or you could crochet with a much larger hook so that the stitches turn out nice and big.
Hi Nadeleule, you can also crochet with two strands of yarn. That means: Take one strand of the fluffy yarn and one strand of regular yarn (in the same color as the fluffy yarn). Then you’ll just need to use a larger hook. But that way, you’ll be able to see the stitches again.
Best wishes, Carola
well, I think I’ve gotten used to it by now :-)
Although I tend to use a smaller hook than recommended.
I only crochet with this kind of yarn in daylight (preferably right by the window), mark every 5 to 10 stitches with stitch markers, and then, of course, count along.
It’s been working pretty well so far...
Hi Nadeleule. I had the same problem. I just used a “regular yarn” along with it… and that way I could see the stitches better. Just give it a try… Have fun. .haekelevi
So: I just grabbed some white fluffy yarn and a white carried-along thread, sat down by the sunny window, and used a size 4.5 hook. The verdict after 30 minutes: I can’t do it, and from now on I’m only making cotton amigurumis!
I bought some fluffy yarn yesterday, too, and was actually planning to crochet with it. But after reading through your posts—I think I’d be better off knitting with it instead. ;-)
it really depends on which plush yarn you choose.
There are some relatively “easy-to-work-with” options—for example, Schachenmayr’s Lenja Soft or Rico’s Teddy Aran.
Long-haired yarns like Brazilia or fur-like yarns are harder to crochet with.
Hi there,
I know this thread is a bit old, but I’ve only just read it now...
I put a stitch marker in every stitch as I crochet (and if I run out, I keep going with safety pins). It’s a bit time-consuming, but it works very well, and I don’t have to feel around and search for the stitches, and I can easily remove them again, since I couldn’t really get the hang of using a second strand of yarn.
Best regards
