Dear users, dear authors,
How do you tie balls of yarn together when doing needlework so they don’t come undone?

There’s something called the “Frankfurt knot,” which holds extremely securely. Just Google it—there are videos that explain it really well. It’s super easy and you can hardly see it.
By the way, with yarn cakes, the individual strands in different colors are also joined using the Frankfurt knot.

Can you then work in the loose ends as you go?

There are no loose ends—they’re cut off. There’s just a tiny knot that you can’t see once you’re working on your project.

However, the knot can slip or come undone if you don’t pull it tight enough.

I always use the weaver’s knot, which is similar to the Frankfurt knot; afterward you can’t see any little threads or knots in the knitted piece anymore.

Akela, I can’t help but smile at your Franconian expressions! Dialect research was one of my favorite subjects in college.

I have to admit that I wasn’t familiar with either the Frankfurt knot or the weaver’s knot. I Googled the former and even tried it out. Am I correct in assuming that it’s only suitable for finer threads? With pot holder yarn, for example, I can’t quite picture it working.

Wollbärli, it’s best to experiment to see where each knot works best—that’s how I’ve always done it.
Wollbärli, I’m Franconian through and through—the female line of my family has been based in Schweinfurt for almost 400 years, and the women have always married men from outside the region, so my roots run very deep. I was born in the Westerwald—my father was from Hesse—but I moved to Lower Franconia when I was 5, and I’ve felt like I belong here ever since.

Best regards, Inge
