Handmade shopping bags: Are they actually used?

Dear users, dear authors,
Handmade or reusable shopping bags, pouches, and shopping nets are all the rage. Do you actually use them? What do you do when it rains?

When it rains, I just bring an umbrella. That way, my groceries don’t get wet.

Yes, I always keep my mesh bag in my purse, and it holds a lot.

Yeah, of course I use my own hand-sewn bags for shopping—I even sewed myself a special one that really stands out.

Personally, when I go shopping, I also prefer cloth bags that I sew myself from fabric scraps. I make the handles nice and long so I can carry the bags over my shoulder. Crocheted bags are usually too bulky or too heavy for me, and you can’t put small items in mesh bags because they might fall through the holes.

I crocheted a shopping net for my mom and myself, and we’ve been taking it with us on every shopping trip ever since. :-) Rain isn’t a problem. I usually have an umbrella with me, and if it does get wet, oh well. ;-)

I use crocheted bags all the time. I always pack my little one’s food, snacks, and clothes in them when he goes to his grandma’s or when we’re out and about. I have three different sizes and find them really super practical.

I do have a few crocheted bags at home, but I have to say that I prefer the classic cloth bags. I find the cloth bags a bit more practical, and I feel like they take up less space in my backpack. But every now and then, I also like to use the crocheted bags :)

Today my crocheted granny bag came with me, and my crocheted mesh bags are in constant use for bringing fruit and vegetables home.

Akela, this one looks great. It can hold quite a bit. Do you pull the drawstring at the top?

Yes, exactly—the drawstring closes the bag; it looks small, but it’s surprisingly roomy. I also sewed this market bag for my godmother; she loves it.

I’ve been using cloth shopping bags for as long as I can remember. If they get wet, I put them on the radiator or hang them up to dry. Back in the day, you could still buy plain cloth bags without any prints. I used to love painting them with my kids, and I still have a few of them today.

I use my sewn shopping bags all the time—I always have one in the car and one in my purse.
I like to sew them from coated cotton fabric, so they’re water-repellent.
