I use a small piece of cotton thread and make a loop out of it. That works best for me. The plastic stitch markers kind of get in the way when I’m knitting. For crochet projects, though, they’re easy to clip onto wherever you want to mark something.
I (almost exclusively a crocheter) often take the starting thread and, while crocheting, place it in the stitch where I want the marker to go. So it gets “crocheted in,” so to speak. And later, I can just pull it out again. However, this only works for smaller crochet projects or if you have enough yarn hanging loose (e.g., from color changes). Otherwise, I cut off a small piece of yarn and insert it at that spot.
I use open (round) stitch markers for amigurumi and clip-on markers for shawls, etc., and I’d like to thank—whoever it may be—for inventing the stitch marker :-))
I’ve never been able to get the hang of using strands of yarn as markers, because by the third round I can’t remember whether I placed it in front of or behind the stitch ;-)
Using lots of colors definitely makes crocheting (and knitting, of course) a lot easier!
I usually use a piece of yarn when crocheting (except for crochet mesh, where I use the commercial ones), and when knitting I use plastic stitch markers (though I rarely need them).
