I'm having trouble with the abbreviations in a crochet pattern

Hi everyone, I need your help! I found a pattern for a beautiful bird, but I’m having trouble understanding the instructions—specifically, some of the abbreviations. The pattern is written in English. I’m stuck on the following abbreviations: pcs, SBN, SV, ZB, DC. Can you help me out? Thanks so much in advance!
All the best,
Mariechaeferli

Hi Marie,

that’s certainly frustrating. The best thing to do would be to message the author directly here to ask what each abbreviation means. Ideally, the abbreviations should be explained somewhere at the beginning of the pattern. Is there perhaps a section that at least explains in English what the abbreviations stand for? For English-language patterns, it’s also important to note whether it’s a US or UK pattern, since the individual crochet terms can sometimes mean different things.

If it’s a US pattern, DC stands for double crochet, which is a double crochet stitch. Unfortunately, the others don’t mean anything to me either.

Best regards

Susi

Hi Marie,

I also think DC stands for Double Crochet.
Pcs might mean “pieces”—that’s just a guess on my part.

I haven’t been able to find the other abbreviations on any of the websites I use for English patterns.

I’d also recommend contacting the author directly.

Hey Marie,
what kind of bird is it? Do you know the author’s name? Is the pattern from CP?
I do often crochet from English patterns, but the other abbreviations don’t mean anything to me either. You’d have to read the full text to understand what might be meant.
Like the others before me, I also think

DC Double crochet = double crochet
pcs = maybe picots

Why don’t you take a closer look to see if there’s a list of abbreviations?
Normally, every pattern should include a key.
Otherwise, I agree—contact the author of the pattern.
There are also some websites that list common abbreviations; you could try Googling for them.

I wish you the best of luck.
Best regards,
Michaela

Hi everyone
Thank you so much for your replies. I usually have no trouble following “standard” English patterns. This pattern is also written in English, but I assume the author (unfortunately, I couldn’t find any further information about her) has a different native language. I suspect it’s Russian. I didn’t get very far using Google and various translation tools, etc. However, after a long search, I found the same pattern written in better English, including the standard English abbreviations :o)! Tonight I’ll finally get started on crocheting.

All the best,
Mariechäferli
