I prefer to use stuffing. I find that it’s the best way to shape the amigurumi. If the amigurumi are intended as toys for children, make sure the stuffing complies with the DIN/EN 71-3 toy safety standard.
Ideally, you should use stuffing. You can buy it specifically as high-loft stuffing. But the filling from pillows is also a good, inexpensive alternative.
There are also stuffing granules for weighing down, for example, feet or doorstops.
You can certainly also use leftover yarn or unspun wool, but you should keep in mind that it then won't be washable, because real wool otherwise felts and clumps together.
Unfortunately, the only stuffing I can get locally has hardly any information on it...
so I’ve gotten into the habit of using inexpensive pillows instead. They always have care instructions on them and are very easy to wash.
I’ve also repurposed an old comforter that had seen better days.
This has worked well for me.
I mostly use this 100% polyester craft stuffing from GLOREX. I stocked up on it in Germany. I’m very happy with it—there are different types out there too (clumpy or that silky, slippery kind—neither of which works well for my projects)
I haven’t worked with pellets yet, but I did use these decorative pellets once in my moose edge sitter. Placed between the craft stuffing—more toward the inside—it worked great. You can’t feel it from the outside.
I usually use pillow stuffing. When I make animals or similar items for babies or toddlers, I like to use old sheer pantyhose cut into small pieces. That way, a cotton teddy bear can even go in the washing machine at 60° without getting damaged.
I recently found one of my kids’ old teddy bears in a really old box. It’s still kept its shape even after 40 years. (If only I could say the same about myself… lol)
To give larger figures stability, I work balsa wood into the soles of their feet and use old marbles that are “wrapped” in stuffing.
Like Bastelfan, I use GLOREX. But what’s even more important is how you stuff the figures.
I always stuff them very tightly until they can’t take any more, since the stuffing becomes very soft after just one year. Stuffing the head and body tightly is especially important. Always insert just small pieces at a time. Reach inside with your index finger and, if necessary, middle finger of both hands, and push the stuffing firmly into the curves. This creates a hollow space in the center that can be refilled again and again until it’s very tightly packed.
