Dear craft enthusiasts,
Has anyone had any experience with this punch needle? I watched a video to see how it works (it’s kind of like embroidery). Until yesterday, I had no idea you could buy something like this here.
I’m curious to know if the embroidery holds up on the back, too. It’s made up of loops, after all.
The principle is similar to that of a sewing machine, except that with a sewing machine I have a bobbin thread, whereas this needle doesn’t (it looks like a cannula with a handle).
Hi,
I haven’t actually seen it, but I know what you mean.
Something like this was around 20 or 25 years ago. I didn’t quite understand the principle either, but somehow it actually seems to hold up.
However, it always looks great on TV—the reality can be quite different...
With things like this, I always like to look for customer reviews, for example on that big online store starting with A... That usually gives you a pretty good idea of whether something like this is any good or not.
I tried this out ages ago as well and wasn’t very satisfied with the process or the result. I remember it was quite tedious, because you have to punch the needle through once for each loop. And if you want a dense “plush” effect, you also have to punch it in very close together. If the fabric is firmer or more tightly woven, it takes quite a bit of effort. And you need the right yarn so that it looks nice on the front, too.
The stitching on the back held up well, but the fabric had puckered a bit. Somehow I remember that after 2 or 3 tries, I didn’t feel like doing it anymore. But trying is better than studying. If the thing isn’t expensive, feel free to give it a try - and then tell us about it.
Thanks, Ina. I just ordered a needle set. For less than 10 euros, I can’t go wrong. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m curious to see how it turns out.
I’m already really excited to see what you’ll make with it (I’m sure it’ll be something great!).
This technique has been heavily promoted in some craft stores in the Ruhr region for about a month now. There were also live demonstrations, but unfortunately not when I was there. The items they had on display looked really cool. And you ordered a set for 10 euros? The materials were much more expensive there.
Please upload some photos here when you’ve finished something, okay?
Maybe you, dear @Bastelfan, will start a new hype here on CP. Everything comes back into fashion if you just wait long enough. Now there’s no getting around it: you have to “needle punch” for us. Unfortunately, your crochet vest will have to wait until you have time for it again. Best thing would be to apply for special leave ;-)
@Nicole and @Ina—definitely. It’s already on its way to me, and I’ve been eagerly waiting for it every day. Maybe it’ll arrive before my vacation, so I can try it out there at my leisure.
I only ordered this needle set—let’s see if it’s any good. It has good reviews, anyway.
@Bastelfan
Dear Andrea, that would be just the thing for vacation. You always have time, peace, and patience there to try out new things. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the mail arrives in time.
Hiya, craft fan....
a whole year later....
how did it work out for you with the needle?
I came across this technique today. I watched a video about it; the technique itself seems straightforward, but why does the needle make loops????
Do you have a picture of your "attempt"?
I'm thinking about whether I should give it a try too...
I always need something new every now and then 😊
Best, Steffi
