Dear users, dear authors,
when do you stop being a beginner?
Let me know.

I’d say that the term “beginner” no longer applies once your basic knowledge of crocheting and/or knitting is so solid that you no longer need an explanation of how to make each stitch.

That’s quite a long-winded sentence, I just realized.

I think you should definitely know the basic stitches as well as increases and decreases, and you should already be able to crochet or knit evenly. Advanced crafters are then more likely to be able to work with different techniques and pattern combinations; thanks to their experience, they can easily follow patterns that include common abbreviations and don’t illustrate or explain every single detail.

It’s difficult when it comes to crafting, because there are so many materials and techniques that you can’t really define it in such broad terms: You can be a pro at free-form crafting, but completely fail when working from patterns. So, I’d consider someone who works from patterns to be an experienced crafter in that area if they’ve successfully completed 3–4 projects.

I think it has a lot to do with how you view yourself. I’ve been sewing for a very long time and quite a lot, but I still wouldn’t call myself an advanced sewist because I still feel unsure when I start a new project. And I almost always need a template, a pattern, and instructions.
It’s different with crocheting and knitting. There, I’m much more confident and like to experiment on my own.

Yes, where is the line? I think everyone defines it for themselves, and it’s very fluid.

Beginners (in my view) don’t have much experience with the technique yet, but they’ve mastered the basics.

Advanced crafters have already developed a certain routine and can master challenges such as complicated lace patterns and other patterns, reading knitting or crochet charts, etc.

Personally, I find that there’s always something new I can learn. And that’s why it never gets boring. :)
