Dear users, dear authors,
I’m sure you’re all familiar with the common prejudices about crafts. Not everyone shares what fascinates you so much here.
How do you deal with that?
These days, I just ignore it. My best friend isn’t into crafts at all. That’s why I don’t even bring up the topic with her. A few years ago, she tried making hats with a loom. She broke three metal hooks and then gave up....
Everyone else knows I’m all about yarn and often asks what I’m currently working on or have just finished.
But honestly, it brings me joy and I’m not hurting anyone by doing it, so I couldn’t care less what others think about it!
At this point, I don’t care at all what others think or say. I’m happy when people approach me about it. Some acquaintances often ask what I’m currently making or have finished. Of course, that makes me happy.
I just enjoy it, and everyone has different hobbies.
Well, this hobby is actually pretty well accepted. Many people also want to learn it or order things.
Every now and then someone makes a "granny" joke, but I just skillfully ignore it. (It’s mostly just for fun, anyway.)
I don’t really talk about it with people who can’t relate to it—it’s that simple :)
I’ve been knitting and crocheting since I was 13. From then until my mid-30s, I often got snide comments about it being a “granny hobby.” Now that knitting and crocheting are recognized as ways to relax, people tend to be more impressed by my years of experience.
Besides, my age is getting closer to “granny” status year by year anyway.... ;-)
I was also really looking forward to retirement.... More time for my hobby, but hey, my hands already hurt.... so what will it be like in 15 years?
I’m usually approached in a friendly way, mostly by older women who have experience with crafts themselves (“That’s great what you’re doing there”), but of course there are also “naysayers” among my acquaintances who think store-bought items would be cheaper. But I stay true to my hobby and don’t let myself be swayed. I gave up trying to convince others otherwise a long time ago. To each their own. Not everyone has to share my hobbies—everyone has their own interests. After all, I’m not interested in soccer or skiing either. So my motto is: live and let live.
