I actually keep a lot of the items for myself. But that’s because
I mostly make clothes, and those are for me. My grandchildren and children hardly want any handmade items anymore.
But I still give some things away too, lots of small items and decorations.
For me, it more or less balances out.
From my patterns, I always keep the final piece, or rather the one that appears in the title image. I’m happy to give away the prototypes, test pieces, or other color variations to friends or to the Diakonie clothing bank. Or I’ll donate something to a charity collection.
Best regards, Caro
For me, I usually give away more than I keep for myself.
Sometimes I make something and firmly resolve, “This one’s definitely for me”… and then when someone raves about it, I end up empty-handed—but it’s still nice to know you’ve made someone really happy.
I’d say I keep roughly half of my creations; the rest I give away.
I always make sure to keep the original piece that goes with my pattern; any other color variations usually get given away. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always work out, but it makes someone else very happy ;-)
Most of it is for me now. I usually don’t like to part with my prototypes, unless they were commissioned pieces (like the Schlenkerkälbchen). My daughter will soon be 13 and says it’s no longer her style. My son has never liked woolen clothes, and the rest of the family only occasionally asks for one thing or another. I do get commissions from friends and acquaintances fairly often, though.
I give most of it away. Since my husband doesn’t like crocheted stuff, I’m not allowed to decorate the apartment with it. Of course, I crochet a lot for Anton, but somehow it still adds up to a lot of gifts.
But I only give gifts to people who appreciate them. For example, two years ago I crocheted a baby blanket, a hat, and booties for a girl. But I was so annoyed with the father that the items are still sitting in the closet. Lately, it’s been nothing but boys. But I’m sure there’ll be a girl along soon who’s worth giving a gift to.
I give away almost everything, because I mostly crochet to order. 99% of the orders are from my kids...
But yes, every now and then I make something just for myself. And then my aunt comes over and her eyes light up when she sees the blanket I’m working on, and just like that, I’ve got a Christmas gift for her. And I don’t have a blanket...
But I only do that for people I know for sure will appreciate what they’re getting.
Sometimes I make something for myself, then someone sees it and says, “Oooh, I’d like that too!” --> Boom, gone!
...Then people are always asking: Do you have another little bear like that? I really need something for.... --> Another one gone.
Then the next person wants a little bear like that too -->... You know how it goes... ;)
Actually, I always tell myself I’ll keep the shawls and stuff so I can take pictures of them when needed... But then my grandma comes over and asks if I still have anything for the fundraiser... --> And off they go...
