Any experience with alpaca yarn?

Hi everyone, I recently stumbled across this link
(Edit Michaela: Link removed) and wanted to ask if any of you have experience with alpaca or merino wool. The site really appeals to me, especially because the wool is fair trade, but I’m not sure if it’s easy to knit with. Thanks in advance! :- ) Best, Alica

I’ve already knitted and crocheted with hand-spun alpaca wool and merino wool. Both types are a joy to work with—they’re soft and feel great in your hands and against your skin. They regulate moisture and balance body temperature. I highly recommend them—especially when it comes to Fairtrade wool.

Alpaca is a dream! While there can be significant differences in softness with merino wool, alpaca is always wonderful and isn’t scratchy.
With alpaca wool, you can (hopefully) also be sure that the animals aren’t mistreated, as is unfortunately still often the case with sheep, especially in Australia (keyword: mulesing—if you’re not familiar with it, please Google it, but be warned: the images aren’t pleasant).

I absolutely love knitting with merino wool—it’s easy to work with and very comfortable to wear. I knitted leggings for my granddaughter out of merino wool that contains some alpaca. It doesn’t itch, it’s fluffy and soft, and it’s quite durable, as I’ve now learned from experience.

Alpaca is something truly special. When it comes to merino wool, I’m also very careful to make sure it doesn’t come from mistreated sheep. I was really shocked when I found out two years ago how (especially cheap) wool is “produced.”

Is alpaca really any good? Then I’ll give it a try too. I recently bought one skein of merino sock yarn that was labeled as mulesing-free. In my excitement, I didn’t even notice that this skein was meant for dyeing yourself.

I bought some ribbon yarn recently. In the store, I found silk ribbon yarn in an organic line. I googled right there in the store to see how silk could be part of an organic line... It’s bourette silk, and the pupa doesn’t have to be killed because empty cocoons are used. I hope that’s true!
