What technique should I use for a hammock?

Hi everyone,
I’ve made an ambitious bet with my boyfriend. If I can knit (or maybe crochet?) him a hammock for the garden by the end of July, he’ll pay for a week’s vacation for me in August. Specifically, it’s this hammock:

On the one hand, it’s a double hammock, so I’d get to use it too. And on the other hand, we both like the colors—they actually match the seat cushions on our patio furniture. Can you give me a few beginner tips on how to tackle a project like this?

Hi Happy-Tina,
that’s a really beautiful hammock.
Maybe the macramé knotting technique would work for this?
Take a look here in this thread — we have info on it. It’s not that hard to learn, and it should go faster than crocheting or knitting.
Arm knitting or arm crocheting might also be an option; you can use thicker yarn for that and finish faster.
Since you knit or crochet with your fingers or arms, you don’t need needles. The thicker yarn means it won’t take as long.

and here are knitting needles in the right size, but arm knitting or arm crocheting works just fine without needles.

There are plenty of great videos on YouTube about arm knitting and arm crocheting. Once you buy the right yarn at a specialty store—or maybe online—you can start practicing. The right yarn for this isn’t exactly cheap, but you might find a good deal online. Since the hammock is meant to hold two people, it’s important to make sure you use good-quality yarn.

Hi!
Thanks for the nice and quick reply. I’ll check out your link suggestions over the next few days. Do you think it’s doable by the end of July? I’d like to know how much I’ll have to “stress out” for the vacation. ;)

I think you’ll do a great job. A week’s vacation is good motivation.

Hey there.... interesting project.... I’d crochet or knot something like that using paracord. This special paracord is very sturdy and can support the weight, but it’s not exactly cheap.

@Tina
How’s it going with your hammock? Have you started making it, or would you rather buy one ready-made?

Hi Tina,

look what I found today. This would be a nice technique for your hammock, too—or are you already hard at work on it?

It's a shame Tina doesn't want to say any more about the hammock and how it's going.

Take a look, I found a short, nice article with a few tips on how to find the right hammock for summer

Tina probably isn’t following this thread anymore, but maybe someone else would like to read the article, because a hammock like that always comes in handy.

I’d be curious to know if you won the bet?? :)

I’d love to know that too, because I can’t really picture it. You’d have to crochet or knit with a very special and strong yarn, and on top of that, it would be a huge amount of work and take a lot of time. If you’ve actually managed to crochet a functional hammock, then I can only congratulate you. To be honest, I’d rather buy a hammock—I’d feel safer that way—but then, of course, the bet would be lost. : )
A few years ago, I bought a large family hammock with a hammock stand, so you can set it up anywhere, unlike the cheaper hammocks that you have to tie to something. In the summer, the hammock is on the patio, and as soon as it gets colder, it goes into our sunroom. I think it’s worth every penny and would recommend that everyone buy a hammock with a stand. It costs a bit more, but it’s worth it in the end. Here ***link removed*** you can see how great these hammocks with stands look. There’s a wide selection, and you can get the stand in wood or metal, whichever you prefer. : )
Best regards
