Spinning Your Own Wool

Hi everyone,
I was wondering how much work it takes to spin your own wool.
Has anyone here ever done this?
Are you familiar with hand spindles? And how much does it cost to buy the materials?

Thanks if you can help :)

Hi CreativBennet,
check this out: https://youtu.be/7zFsxDHmIdQ
it’s a video on spinning on YouTube.
There are tons of videos on YouTube about spinning anyway.
Maybe there are people in your area who do it and would let you watch them—or even let you try the spinning wheel—so you can give it a shot before you buy your own equipment.
I don’t know if any of the readers here on the forum spin themselves, but maybe someone else will chime in.
Have fun :)

No, I’ve never tried it, and I don’t plan to either.

Hmm, that doesn’t look all that hard! I checked the prices, and a spinning wheel like that can cost 50, 150€ and up!
But I might get one as a gift, which is why I’m asking. I think I’ll give this “adventure” a try :)

So no one else here knows about this?

Can you crochet or knit with the spun wool right away without any further processing?
Sunny greetings

@Sidney
I’d love to know that, too. I looked it up on Google.
Apparently you can’t process it right away, but have to soak it in hot water first. The soaking time depends on the temperature and how much wool grease is still in it. If you’re spinning raw wool, you’re supposed to soak it in vinegar water—I don’t know why, is it to set the color? That can’t be right, can it? You’re not dyeing it, after all. And then you have to gently spin-dry the wool in a pillowcase or something so it doesn’t get tangled, let it dry, and only then knit with it.
When you use raw wool instead of combed top, it’s just a bit more complicated.
It’s a real shame we don’t have anyone here who knows about this—I can only scour the internet for info, but I’ve never done it myself.

So, how did the spinning project turn out? Is the spinning wheel working out?
