Hi, could someone tell me what the advantage of pearl yarn is and what it’s used for? That would be great, thanks. Is it suitable for knitting and crocheting, or is it more for decorative little items?

HI, you can actually use pearl yarn for just about anything. You just have to like the look of it. Personally, I don’t like it.
But, for example, crocheted jewelry, hats, and knitted shawls look quite elegant when you use high-quality pearl yarn.

Where I personally think pearl yarn is really great is for borders on tablecloths

Why not just give it a try? :)

I’m mostly familiar with pearl cotton from embroidery—I’ve used it for cross-stitch.
Otherwise, I mainly use pearl cotton for macramé (knotted bracelets).
It looks beautiful (mercerized pearl cotton has a lovely, subtle sheen), and the texture works well for that.
I’ve also used pearl cotton (hand-dyed from Canada) for crocheting—specifically for my mini-yarn-ball pendants—and it looks great there too and is nice and sturdy (it has to be, because there’s a mini crochet hook or mini knitting needle inside the yarn ball, and it needs to hold its shape).
I’ve never used pearl cotton for larger crochet projects, though...

What does something made with pearl cotton look like?
I think I have a store-bought hat made from it, but I’m not sure.
Is it very warm, or not really?

No, pearl yarn isn’t really warm. It’s mercerized cotton yarn, so if anything, it’s better suited for summer hats. However, it’s quite firm, so it’s not very soft or cozy. For hats, I’d prefer cotton yarn like Catania!

I only know it for embroidery and for Hardanger.
For Christmas, I crocheted around a small ring and made a little angel from a pattern here; it looks lovely.

Back in the ’70s, I once crocheted myself a short vest out of pearl cotton. I still remember well the search for “colorful” yarn. Back then, there simply wasn’t the variety of color shades you can find today. You could only get that with embroidery thread. That’s where I found what I was looking for and crocheted a bright, colorful rainbow vest. It was a real hit back then.

I'll bump this back up, since newcomers among the forum users might appreciate information about this and other types of yarn.
So if anyone would like to add anything about the topic of pearl cotton or would like to know something, please post it here.

I like using pearl cotton when I want to test how small I can make an amigurumi without having to change a pattern. Both of these are made with pearl cotton. I enjoy working with it.
