Bookmarks are always a popular little gift and ideal for using up leftover yarn. You can crochet them now and then in between. That way, you’ll always have a small stash of little gifts at home. For bookmarks, I recommend thin cotton yarn (e.g., Catania fine, LL 165 m/50g) or sock yarn. That way, the bookmark won’t add too much bulk.
Here are 2 suggestions that are sure to delight:
The Frog Prince for fairy tale lovers

Dragon for fantasy fans

Who doesn't think little kittens are cute? Here you can crochet a whole bunch of adorable little house cats and use up your colorful leftover yarn. (I used Catania by Schachenmayr, but almost any other yarn will work.) The kittens are super easy to crochet and make a lovely little gift to bring along for cat lovers.

Grannies are especially good for using up leftover yarn. With each granny, I can choose a new leftover yarn from the box again.

A pattern for making this balloon cover. Individual grannies are crocheted and then joined together at the end to form a ball. We leave an opening so the balloon can be replaced again and again, and so the cover can dry quickly without anything inside after washing.

In the pattern, crocheting the grannies and especially sewing the grannies together is explained in detail with pictures, step by step.

Ball pattern

This cover for a phone / tissues is also crocheted from individual small grannies and then sewn together. At the end, our granny strip is crocheted around with a pretty zigzag pattern.

You often have leftover yarn in pretty spring colors at home. And you can combine that perfectly with a Mother's Day gift. Any mom will be delighted with an egg cup for the breakfast table or a small crocheted-around flower vase.

For the egg cups you need
  • Crochet hook size 2.5
  • Darning needle for weaving in the ends and sewing on the individual pieces
  • Yarn: I used leftovers suitable for a hook size of 2.5–3.5.
  • Empty toilet paper roll or, for the vase, a narrow glass—I used an empty olive jar.

  • You should know how to make chain stitches, single crochet, slip stitches, and double crochet.

In the pattern, you’ll find it described row by row, and there is also a small crochet chart included for a better overview.

Colorful leftover cotton yarn piles up quickly, and then you’re not quite sure what to do with it. The good news: you can knit with it!

    How about a bracelet?

Quick to make and not hard at all.

Or a bookmark for the bookworms?

Also quick to make, a little more difficult—but definitely nothing to be afraid of!

Abracadabra… You can work magic! With just a few grams of thin cotton yarn, you can create the most beautiful doll clothes. I bet your kids will be thrilled! You can crochet different designs and mix and match them however you like. Feel free to check out my examples in the pattern.

I hope you have lots of fun using up your leftover yarn. Bring on the summer!
    Warm regards from Ina
