Dear users and authors,
what material do you prefer for knitting and crochet needles? What’s a total no-go? Where have you had good or bad experiences? Let me know.
For yeeears I only used the metal crochet hooks with thin plastic handles that you can find pretty much everywhere.
I was completely happy with them.
At some point, because of lots of positive reviews, I bought a pack of bamboo hooks , simple wooden hooks, without a handle or anything.
Personally, I just couldn’t get on with them at all...
First, the yarn kept slipping off because the notch in the “hook” wasn’t very deep, and second, with the smaller ones I had the impression that they would break quickly. I didn’t use the ones under 4 mm at all.
A few months ago I unpacked my metal hooks from the discount store because all my 3 mm hooks were already in use... I mean the ones without a handle or anything... Just the really cheap, thin ones.
At first it felt strange, but I got used to it and now I hardly use anything else. I have sooo many of them that there’s always one in the right size free :)
In the end, I think it’s absolutely a matter of taste and what you’re used to.
I prefer to crochet with Prym crochet hooks. They have a comfortable grip and feel good in my hand. I also have a few plastic hooks, but I really don’t like working with them because they constantly “stick” to the yarn. I don’t have much experience with knitting needles since I don’t knit very often, but when I do, I use needles I inherited from my grandma or cheap brands—those work fine too.
I’ve also had good experiences with KnitPro knitting needles, though mostly with the fixed ones. I don’t always get along so well with the interchangeable ones. Even though I tighten them with the key, they sometimes come loose. I prefer to knit with wooden or bamboo knitting needles.
When it comes to crochet hooks, I feel the same way as Tina. My favorites are the ones with a handle and a metal hook. They work great and are also very durable.
I also prefer working with Prym crochet hooks; I don’t like bamboo hooks at all—I find they get in the way when I’m crocheting.
I wanted to treat myself, so I bought the ergonomic Addi hooks in two sizes.
After using them, I developed tendonitis in my wrist. I tried using them again from time to time, but it was always the same result.
Now I only use them for very small projects. The one exception is the Addi Tunisian crochet hooks—I absolutely love them.
