A few years ago, my daughter wanted all the amigurumi, hats, sweaters, etc. for herself, but since she hit puberty, she’s become very picky, and the items have to match her exact preferences (color, pattern, material).
Most of the time, I get to keep the items myself. Every now and then I’ll make something for birthdays or similar occasions, but even that has slowed down.
However, ever since I started knitting cable patterns, my husband has shown more interest.
I don’t have any children or grandchildren, so my husband has to be the one I make things for. My mother-in-law loves pot holders, and she always gets a new door wreath.
Sometimes I get requests like, “Can you make this or that?” and then I try to bring the idea to life.
I especially love making things for motorcycle enthusiasts—who would have thought they’d like crocheted door wreaths?
Back when I didn’t have kids yet, I only crocheted and knitted for myself.
Once I had kids, I started making things for them, and for a while I focused exclusively on fulfilling their requests.
Now their requests are becoming fewer, but the projects are more elaborate—currently, a special bedspread for each of them, designed exactly as they want it.
More and more relatives and friends are also asking for shawls and door wreaths.
And what I especially like is that I’m crocheting more for myself again. I’ve had two yarn cakes since the end of last summer, and now I can turn them into a beautiful summer cape for myself.
I usually just start crocheting, and whatever I make usually finds an owner all by itself. My dad claims any new amigurumi he sees lying around, and when it comes to clothes, there’s almost always someone who wants them anyway...
When I wear something, I sometimes hear, “Oooh, I’d like that too!” and yeah, it’s gone ;-) Last winter, my sister laughed about how everyone around me is walking around in scarves I made, while I’m wearing store-bought stuff.
Right now, I’m still working on the motif blanket for my boyfriend… (A blanket based on his favorite game.) He doesn’t actually think crocheted things are very pretty (it’s a matter of taste, after all), but he can hardly wait for the blanket to be finished. (Only 79.8% to go :D)
Any clothes that nobody snatches up and that I don’t wear myself get donated. I often donate kids’ clothes in particular because I enjoy making them, but I hardly know any kids.
the circle of people I make things for is pretty broad.
My kids and I get most of the things I make.
Then I crochet for my cousin’s children, for
the teachers at school, for the after-school
care staff, for my godchild and her sister.
And sometimes I also take on commissioned projects.
At the end of 2016, after a 20-year hiatus, I started knitting and crocheting again—specifically for my granddaughter. It was her mother’s wish.
And that’s when I started really enjoying it again.
Linja will turn 2 in March, and I’ve been taking pretty good care of her so far. Since they’re already planning another baby, I’ve already started designing the baby essentials. To be honest, that’s what I enjoy the most.
I also really enjoy knitting for myself. Since none of our friends or relatives are exactly my size (or live too far away), I get to keep everything. ;-)
My husband had asked for a scarf and a hat, and of course I fulfilled those wishes for him. I already have some ideas for next winter about what else he might like.
Well, and then I also enjoy decorating our apartment with useful crocheted items. Naturally, it often happens that our visitors see something they like and want it for themselves. That’s why I’ve already prepared a few gifts for Easter and Valentine’s Day this year.
Petra, I wouldn’t have thought that motorcycle enthusiasts would be into crocheted door wreaths either… interesting. ;-)
A lot of my crafts are made as gifts—for birthdays or Christmas. But I also knit, crochet, sew, and embroider for myself and for our home. My grandchild in America will be the next “victim”...
