Selling a Homer Simpson Crochet Pattern?

Hi everyone, I’m currently trying my hand at crocheting a Homer Simpson and using that as a basis to create a pattern. Does anyone know what the legal or licensing implications are if I were to post and sell a Homer Simpson pattern? Is it that simple...?

As a rule, rights holders prohibit the sale of such products. 
Please contact the license holder first, if necessary, and seek advice there. 
If permission is granted, which is extremely rare, it certainly will not be free. 
I generally advise against creating a pattern from licensed products. If you do so without permission, you are taking a big risk.

Funny, I started my designer career with exactly the same question.
I had crocheted a Homer Simpson, created the pattern, and was looking for a way to sell it.
I’ll cut right to the chase: 
No, you may not sell the pattern. You should be very, very careful with licensed characters.
You may be able to purchase licenses for selling, but normally no “small” designer can afford that.
Try searching the forum for the topic of licensed characters and similar things; you should find quite a bit :)

What’s the general rule here if I want to sell patterns on this site that don’t feature licensed characters, etc.? Does that automatically count as a side business, or can you just sell them that easily?
