Project Week: Making the Most of Leftovers // 10/30 - 11/6

Dear users, dear designers,
I know that quite a few users / designers here are already raring to go and want to get started. So let’s just begin right away.

What it’s about:
Anyone who would like to join in should use up as much leftover yarn as possible from 10/30 to 11/6.

Your reward:
- Praise and recognition from me here in the thread, from all the users and designers reading along, and of course, very importantly, from family / friends offline, who will surely think it’s great when leftover yarn gets used up.
- The more you use up, the more beautiful projects you’ll have.
- Your project list will shrink because you can make a lot of it: warm winter clothing, Christmas decorations, gifts, etc. etc.
- Your stash will shrink, and you can buy yarn again.
- You can chat and learn new tips and tricks for dealing with leftover yarn.
- Anyone who uses up a lot by the end of the week may call themselves Best of the Leftovers and will be honored by me at the awards ceremony.

Very important:
Take a photo of your leftover-yarn stash before you get started, as well as of the finished projects and the remaining leftover yarn at the end of the week.

Have fun. This is going to be wonderful.

Awards ceremony:
Thank you all for joining in my projects so diligently and enthusiastically. That is wonderful and also motivates me to offer more projects.

Now, on to the winners:

Wollefaden / Marion was extremely diligent.
Big praise for that. The hats turned out wonderfully.
Congratulations on the title “Best of the Leftovers”; you’ve earned it.

Iglinz also worked hard for her title “Best of the Leftovers” and truly earned it. Big praise for the shawl and the other projects made with leftovers. In Shop von iglinz you’ll find wonderfully creative patterns.

JanasHandarbeiten also bravely worked on the leftovers. I’m not exactly sure how far you got, but you are Best of the Leftovers too.

Arni is on maternity leave and is therefore of course also mentioned here at the awards ceremony, because anyone who, despite a baby and everyday life, still finds time on the side for crafting is brave and diligent and therefore Best with Baby. :-)

Mowi19 is our Best Little Sheep Maker. The sleeping bag for the well-loved little sheep is not only creative but also totally cute.

ChristinaE is our Best at Sticking With It. I’ll be very happy to award you the title Best of the Leftovers next time. As far as I can tell, you were diligent, and your projects will be finished soon. You can do it.

Hi Josefa,

you’re right—I’m already raring to go, and here’s my basket of leftover yarn that I put together. I have so many leftovers, so I just pulled some out to use. Let’s see if I have to refill it.

Best regards, Marion

Oops, I posted in the wrong thread earlier. So here is my leftover yarn again.

Just use up as much leftover yarn as possible—it’s not about finishing anything specific.

Photos would be nice. If you don’t want to take photos, then just don’t.

Hi Josefa,

my basket has already gotten a bit lighter — 8 hats are already finished. Since I still need some other yarn, I added a few skeins to it.

Here’s my photo

Happy holiday

Marion, if you keep this up, you’ll soon run out of leftover yarn!

I’ll show you my progress so far. I’ve used up 3 lots of leftover yarn so far, and 2 more are currently in progress.

Hi iglinz

Your shawl is turning out beautifully. I won’t run out of leftover yarn that quickly.
Let me show you my hats.

So, I finally got the picture sorted out. This is the first part of my leftover yarn, but I’m not making any progress on that part and have started something new with some other leftover yarn.

@iglinz

Yes, I’ve been knitting these since Monday morning. In the meantime, I’ve crocheted 8 more hats from the thick yarn.

Best regards, Marion

Wollefaden: I’m curious to see what else you’ll manage to finish.
I’m also using up leftover yarn right now, but I’ve already been doing that for two weeks (it’s going to be a blanket), so that doesn’t count.

@iglinz

Don’t worry, I do get some sleep. I don’t just sit at home knitting all day. Yesterday afternoon, for example, I was out and about, and I didn’t knit in the evening either.

Let’s see what else I can add by the end of the week.

Best, Marion

You still have until Monday, then I’ll choose the leftover-yarn champions.
But don’t worry, this event will be repeated regularly.
:-)

Oh, I’m so glad. I don’t think it’s really going to work out for me this time. ;( But at least I’ve started on my daughter’s Christmas gift (also a blanket), but I still need more yarn.

Have a lovely afternoon, everyone.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take a photo of the scraps, but since it fits here, I’ll include it anyway.
My oldest granddaughter (11) was here over the weekend, and I noticed that she’d stuffed her half-worn-out and much-loved stuffed animal—a little sheep—into a sock, as a sort of second coat, so to speak.

That gave me the idea to crochet a sleeping bag for her little sheep using the leftover yarn from the last color challenge. It now serves as a second skin, so to speak.

Here you can see the sheep (yes, it’s just one ;-)) without its new outfit and the sleeping bag next to it.

And here’s what it looks like when it’s wearing it—from the front and from the side:

I may not be the “Scrap Queen,” but at least I did my tiny little part.

Unfortunately, I didn’t take step-by-step photos of the instructions, since everything had to be finished this weekend. After all, the sheep was cold. ;-)

But at least I was able to write down the instructions and will post them as an idea on my blog here at CP. With a sleeping bag like this, you can save quite a few stuffed animals for a while longer.

Dear mowi

That’s so cute! I would have loved to see your granddaughter’s eyes when she discovered her beloved little sheep in the sleeping bag! Great idea, bravo!

My boxes of leftover yarn haven’t gotten much emptier, but I really like the idea: it makes you think about what to actually do with all those half-used skeins! The wrist warmers were quite a challenge for me, since the yarn was damaged every few meters. But I was already able to wear them yesterday! The little angel still needs its starch bath—it just got finished!
I’m already looking forward to the next event!

Good morning

I already ended the “LEFTOVERS” challenge yesterday, since there didn’t seem to be much interest in it.
Since last Monday, I’ve used a total of 1,156 g of yarn. I knitted and crocheted 20 hats and 1 pair of baby shoes with it.
I’ve started the wrist warmers and will finish them soon.
Here are my photos of the finished pieces and the leftover yarn basket.

Have a wonderful day.

You’ve made some amazing things. It’s truly fascinating what you can create from leftover yarn.
I just did the math—so far, I’ve used just under 600 meters of leftover sock yarn for my shawl. But I’m going to keep going. I still have a little leftover yarn left.

@Marion ,
I can assure you that this thread has been viewed _very_ often.
Not everyone had the time to participate in the current leftover yarn challenge, but there was plenty of interest.

@everyone,
you still have until tonight to use up your leftovers or post about it here, and then I’ll hand out the titles.

Dear Christina and Marion,

wow, you’ve been so hard at work and have finished some beautiful projects! Really great—you absolutely deserve the title. For me, it was more of a random way to use up leftover yarn. :-)

Yes, Christina, Lara was thrilled. She couldn’t wipe the grin off her face. That was probably her best birthday present—and an unplanned one at that. She turned 11 on Saturday and really wanted to celebrate with us.

Well, she immediately inspected our yarn stash and made a few Christmas wish list requests. The two boys (6 and 8), on the other hand, were fascinated by the little guard bear. I think that was the only reason they went to the bathroom more often than usual. ;-) The elf family was also an absolute hit to play with. I had no idea what all you could do with it. Really fun.

I think I have a few more ideas now for my yarn stash...

Best, Monika

Okay, everyone,
I held the awards ceremony in the very first post of this thread, and everyone here in the thread has been awarded a title. :-)

The next leftover challenge will be in January, since we now have the Wollstuben project for Advent and Christmas, and all the leftover yarn will be used up there anyway.

Dear Josefa
Thanks for the feedback. You wrote that so well—about “bravely working through the leftover yarn.”
There were 1.5 baby booties. But I was brave—smile—.

Jana

Have a lovely evening, everyone

Dear Josefa,

You did a wonderful job with that. The titles you’ve given each of us are just fantastic.
Thank you so much for the title, and I’m sure I’ll be participating again in January.

Marion
I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.

The January challenge is sure to be great, since there might be plenty of leftover yarn to use up by then. You can start collecting it now. :- )

Dear Josefa, Thank you so much for the wonderful title. Baby-Beste says thank you :-)

I think your activities are really great. Right now, I’m reading everything with great interest (it works really well while breastfeeding), and I think I’ll fully join in again next year—once the move is over and Anton stays this easy-going.
Best regards, Sandra

Dear Josefa,
thank you so much for awarding me the title. I think everyone here in the thread has done a great job.
Right now, I’m using up my very last bit of leftover yarn (I’d have more, but then the shawl would be too big). Maybe I’ll be able to show you all the finished shawl tomorrow.

Dear Josefa

Thank you so much for the lovely title! Yes, I definitely want to keep at it, and not just with the leftover yarn!
There are always more than enough ideas and motivation here at CP!

Warm regards

Yesterday I knitted until my fingers were sore. I still have to weave in the ends, and I still have to block it. There are about 775 meters of leftover sock yarn in it.

Thank you so much, dear Christina! I just mustered up the motivation to weave in all those loose ends. It feels like there are thousands of them.
