Removing the smell of smoke from wool

Today, the high-loft acrylic bobble yarn I ordered yesterday arrived. The color is really great, but unfortunately, the yarn smells terribly of old cigarette smoke. I smoke myself (but only outside) and my sense of smell is very poor, but I can still detect this nasty smell. Is there anything I can do about it? I mean, before I start working with it?

Do you have a place (like a garden or balcony) where you can air out your yarn thoroughly for a few days?

I have a large garden, but it’s raining very heavily right now. I’ve placed it by the bathroom window, which is sheltered from the rain, and planned to put it in a plastic bag with dryer sheets later.
To make matters worse, I just weighed it again and it’s 110g less than stated. I’ll get a refund for the difference, but I’m annoyed because now there isn’t enough for my planned project...

@Nadeleule, coffee is very good at neutralizing a lot of odors. Give it a try: Put a few coffee beans (or 1 tablespoon if you have ground or instant coffee) in a bowl and place the bowl in a bag. Put your yarn in the same bag so that it doesn’t touch the coffee, and close it all up for a few hours.

Thanks, Inna! Coffee beans might work better than dryer sheets.

I don’t know what dryer sheets are, but I can deodorize my compost bin with coffee :-).

That’s right, coffee is a great tip. This happened to me once—I went on vacation, unplugged the fridge, and something was still inside. Don’t ask what it smelled like after three weeks. Putting a cup of coffee in there worked wonders.

I’ve already tried putting coffee in the fridge—I hadn’t even thought of that. Dryer sheets are used in the dryer to prevent static. They usually have a fresh scent.

@Nadeleule, I googled it right after my post :-).
Since I’ve never owned a dryer, the whole topic of dryer sheets had completely passed me by. But now I know, thanks!

Hi, I would have sent the yarn back or filed a complaint right away. It’s completely unacceptable that it smells like that. I once received a bag of wool from a smoker’s household—the smell wouldn’t go away, so I threw it all away back then.
Best regards and good luck

I’d also say that since the yarn cake already has two issues (the smell and the amount being too small for your project), I’d send it back and work with the seller to find a solution… maybe it was just a one-time mistake.
