Trend Info: Blanket as a Scarf

Dear users, dear authors,
I’ve discovered a great new trend for you that’s perfect for trying out. :-) It’s really simple: scarves the size of cozy blankets are in style. So just grab a blanket that’s not too heavy and wear it like a scarf. You definitely won’t get cold that way. Alternatively, you can simply make one of the many scarf patterns from the shop a little bigger by adding a few more rows or some extra fabric. With a little creativity, you might even be able to improvise a new poncho. :-)

Who’s joining the blanket-as-scarf trend?
--> Great for people who are always cold.

I noticed last winter that scarves are getting bigger and wider, and this year they seem to be getting even bigger. It often looks very cozy when these giant scarves are draped around the neck. What caught my eye is the material, which looks rather light and soft. If you wanted to knit something like this, you’d probably have to use thinner yarn. It’ll take a while, but it’s definitely worth it. I can’t really picture them being crocheted, because the stitch pattern is a bit sturdier. But maybe I’m just overthinking it.

Using double crochet works really well—it lets you make the (larger) scarf softer and less sturdy when crocheted. I tried that a few years ago.
See, I can contribute some crafting know-how too. :-)

Josefa, now I’m surprised—you can actually crochet! :-) You could easily join in with Wollkaiserin too! With a scarf like that, you’ll make a lot of progress!

Yes, I can. The oversized scarf actually earned me compliments. The color scheme was pretty odd, striped, with pale yellow + blue-purple yarn. It didn’t go with anything, but it looked nice. I washed it, and it fell apart in the process, and that was the end of the scarf.
I don’t have enough yarn to join in with the Yarn Empress. Besides, I don’t have the time for large projects like that.

That’s a shame on both counts: that the scarf came apart and that you have so little time. I hope you still have enough time this weekend to put your feet up and not think about us crazy bunch here at all.

I can really imagine a blanket scarf like that with knitted dropped stitches.

I'll keep that in mind as one of my next projects.

Oh—Josefa, congratulations!
Do you perhaps have a picture of your “blanket scarf”?

When I was a kid, I always thought Mexicans didn’t wear coats—they just draped a blanket around themselves...

I’ll admit that I sometimes repurpose my alpaca shoulder warmer and drape it over my cold legs—grinsss

Best regards, Traudelina

...I mean, of course, before it “fell apart”...

@Traudelina,
there’s no photo. I proudly showed it around, but didn’t photograph it because of the strange color combination. Color-wise, it looked like a soft Easter chick with a bright lilac collar. If anyone wants to swipe this idea for Easter decorations, be my guest, you can have it, but then I want a proof photo.
That’s what you get when you just go shopping normally at the supermarket. You have to take whatever yarn they have and can’t be picky. Unlike you all, I’m not a regular at yarn shops, online or offline.

When I retire someday, I’ll crochet a lot. Assuming retirement still exists then. Maybe we’ll all have to work until we drop.

Anyway, as long as your shoulder warmer is nice and warm, there’s nothing wrong with using it for something else. :-)
