Crafts: Painting Your Own Candles

Hi everyone,
well, I don’t think you necessarily need instructions for painting candles, but I thought this article was really nice and it gave me a few ideas.

Acrylic paint wouldn’t be my first choice for this kind of thing. I’m not sure whether heating acrylic paint is a good idea, and candles do get warm when they burn, after all.

But my main question about this article is: we also have a category for crafts here on Crazypatterns. I took a look, and there are a few patterns there, but not that many yet. Is there no demand for craft patterns here on CP, or is it more because crochet and knitting are in such high demand that there’s less time left for crafts? I think there definitely could be a market for well-made craft patterns. Since you can buy all kinds of decorative items relatively cheaply, I think craft skills have somehow taken a bit of a back seat. Would you agree?
Crafting decorative boxes in particular is really on the rise, or rather it’s doing really well; there are lots of blogs about it and all that. Here on Crazypatterns, orimono/osaki has also posted a few patterns on this topic. I think quite a few people really like what you can make from beautiful, high-quality paper.

So, anyway, I’m not a seller or anything, but I just wanted to know how you feel about crafting in general. Do you think it would be worth expanding the selection on Crazypatterns in this area, or do you think it’s not really necessary? It would be nice if we could exchange some thoughts on this.
I wish everyone here a pleasant week

Anyone can paint candles, but that’s probably as far as it goes when it comes to carving them.http://youtu.be/5w9Dv6GT0ac
or can you actually pull that off? ;-)
There’s still room for growth in the craft section—you could easily upload lots of nice patterns that aren’t quite as difficult as the candle video.
Have a great and very pleasant week, too!

It can also be done more easily: there is a writing foil that you can use to put designs on candles. I did that a few years ago and it was very well received. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a digital camera back then.
Take a look at a craft supply shop under candle art, “writing foil,” e.g. at Hobby-Glass

Hamster’s video with the carved candles is amazing.

Yeah, carving candles is totally awesome, but I think you have to be quick and skilled before the soft wax hardens again. And you just can’t mess up the carving, or else you’ll have to start over from the beginning.

There’s a simple yet very beautiful technique for candles: wrap a candle with the top layer of a pretty napkin and simply iron it on. The napkin soaks up the wax, and as it cools, it becomes part of the candle. Simple, ingenious, and very beautiful.

@Nadelkissen
Will the iron survive that?

Of course the iron will survive—just wipe it down with the remaining layers once, and it’ll be wax-free again. If you don’t want to do that, you can also heat a spoon over a candle and use that—just make sure it doesn’t produce soot. You could also stamp the remaining layers yourself and then iron them on; there are lots of possibilities. You can even do this with printed designs:
