Finger Puppet Comeback?

Dear users, dear authors,
Could it be that finger puppets / hand puppets are making a comeback right now?
Are there any reasons for this?
Do you like finger puppets?

Let me know. :-)

Since I crochet a lot of finger puppets myself, I’d be really happy to see this trend take off! However, I haven’t really noticed a major “boom” so far.

I think finger puppets have a lot of advantages:
  • Since they’re so small, you can take them anywhere.
  • They stimulate imagination and creativity even in the very youngest children
  • Through role-playing, fears and conflict situations can be acted out and thus worked through (a trip to the doctor!).
  • They can act as a “voice” for parents. (If the puppet asks the child to clean up, it might actually be more fun!)
  • and, and, and...
I started crocheting finger puppets when my daughter asked me to—she didn’t want to buy any for her little son because most of them are glued together or contain sharp or small parts. I had a blast doing it. They’re quick to crochet, and you can really let your creativity run wild when designing them. Soon, they were flying off the shelves among my friends and acquaintances. Then I created my first patterns.

Hand puppets are, of course, even more lifelike because they can move their heads and arms. However, they’re more time-consuming to make and aren’t yet suitable for very young children, since they can’t yet control the puppets with their tiny hands. I’ve also made Kasperl puppets for my grandchildren. It’s a very varied and enjoyable activity!

I have heads from hand puppets lying around. There were moths in the old material. At some point I’ll have to dress them too.

Here’s a photo of the hand puppets.

I can speak from experience. When my youngest son was born (he’s four now), I searched high and low for DIY finger puppets but unfortunately couldn’t really find any. In the end, I sewed some out of fabric scraps. (I wasn’t really crocheting back then.)
But little by little, I’m noticing that they really are making a comeback. Finger and hand puppets are especially wonderful for the very little ones.
My little one is already a bit “too big” for finger puppets, but he really enjoys playing with hand puppets.

It could be that Polly Pocket is making a comeback or is back in the spotlight. That’s what my current trend observations suggest, though I’m not entirely sure yet. Perhaps the revival of small, cute play worlds could also give finger puppets a boost again. The advantage is that all these play worlds and sets are small enough that you can have lots of them. Barbie accessories and baby doll accessories do take up quite a lot of space, after all.

Do you like Polly Pocket and the like?

You can definitely create small, cute play worlds in the crafts sector using wool, fabric, or photo card—you don’t necessarily need plastic for that. You could make matching figures, worlds, sets, accessories, clothing, and all sorts of things in mini format. That would definitely be fun.

Does this appeal to any authors out there?
