Mermaid trend as a replacement for the owl trend? TV series “H2O: Just Add Water”

well, not that we misunderstand each other, I think owls are great. But you also have to look at what else is happening in the trend market.
and I think I’ve found _the_ current trend of the season. In an article in the FAZ, no less. yes, in the FAZ. :)
at first this article fooled me too, because for a long time it’s only about mermaiding, swimming with mermaid fins. At first I thought, the woman with the swim school who offers courses on “diving like a mermaid”—I wonder whether that’s a viable business model?
Apparently it is, if it’s already a big hit in other cities and all across Germany too.
so, first here’s the article
http://www.faz.net/aktuell/gesellschaft/beim-mermaiding-wird-man-per-flosse-zur-meerjungfrau-13271115.html
Mermaids like Disney’s Ariel have always been trendy. Somehow there has always been a market for mermaids. But Ariel isn’t really at the center of the mermaid trend anymore now that there’s this Australian series, which I personally haven’t watched yet, but I rarely watch TV anyway and youth programs not at all. So it’s easy to miss something. ;)

what do you think, will this be the new trend that replaces owls? Is there even already demand for mermaid patterns?
I think I saw a mermaid here in the shop at Crazypatterns, but that was probably a while ago too. I’ll have to look again.
Am I the only one seeing a connection between swimming courses and handcraft patterns?
well, I’d be terribly proud of myself if I were the one who, with a FAZ article here on Crazypatterns, really got the mermaid trend rolling, but well, of course I can’t do that alone; this mermaid idea would have to excite other people here too.
please tell me how you feel about a mermaid in handcraft patterns. And also whether you think this could be the next big trend or just a flop in the water, literally speaking, see the article above. ;)

Hi muetzekatze,

thank you so much for the great article.
I teach swimming lessons for kids ages 4 and up (it’s actually my “day job” ;-) ) and I’ve never heard of mermaid fins before. Thanks for the great tip. I’ll have to check out where I can find something like that and how much it costs =)))
My girls in swimming class are always playing Ariel and friends, too. So for them, mermaids are still all the rage even though the movie’s been out for a while. I can’t say whether they’re that popular outside the water, though. I only have boys myself, and different things are more popular with them.

Best, Nici

There have been quite a few shows and reports on this, but so far it hasn’t had much of an impact.
Little girls might like it, but maybe only for a certain period of time

@Nici
wow, that’s great that you’re teaching swimming lessons. Were you able to find the fins?
After reading the article in the FAZ, I really thought fin swimming would be the absolute craze all across Germany. I guess I misunderstood something.
But I’d love it if that were to happen.
Arielle is always a safe bet—she’s a movie character everyone knows, and she’s cute, too. :)

@Bastelhilde
So you’re not very optimistic that this can translate into a trend in the DIY world.
Hmm.
Well, I’ve been dreaming forever of being the one to be the first to spot the trend after owls—or at least introduce it here on the forum.
But so far, it just hasn’t worked out. :)
I’ll just have to see if I can find something else that’s really trendy.
So I’m kind of like a trend scout in the DIY world—or rather, I’d like to be one, but unfortunately I always seem to miss the mark.
Oh well, I’ll just have to practice more, and then I’ll get the hang of spotting trends in the DIY world. :)
Or maybe owls are just too big of a trend—that could be it, of course. ;)

Everyone always wants to be Ariel or a mermaid. No one wants to be a blue whale, even though these animals are truly majestic. ;-) I thought of the blue whale because I saw a blue whale amigurumi in the shop at crazypatterns that’s totally adorable.

I don’t mean to brag, but I stumbled upon the mermaid trend in the DIY scene pretty early on back then—
long before there was a wide selection of mermaid blankets. I’m not half bad as a trend scout :)

Anyway,
there’s now something else in this category that’s an absolute must-have.
A mermaid skirt with a mesh pattern—or what do you call it?
http://crochetkitten.blogspot.de/2014/06/a-little-mermaid-skirt.html
Yeah, that’s in English.
But I think trends like this will
spill over from the U.S. to us here in Germany, so in that sense :)
Of course, this isn’t really something for winter. Unless maybe you wear at least three pairs of tights at once under the skirt—then it might be something for Carnival?

And it doesn’t really look like a mermaid either—well, because of the color and because the skirt gets narrower toward the bottom but then has an A-line at the hem, so it flares out a bit. And the mesh pattern looks like fish scales. They really nailed that fish-scale look with the model in the picture.

It’s just going to become a “trend” because of mermaids and all that.
But seriously,
what’s the point of it? It doesn’t keep you warm. It doesn’t cover anything.
Well, okay, it just fulfills mermaid dreams. And you can’t put a price on that.
And it doesn’t get in the way when you’re walking. It leaves your feet free and has a short slit at the front bottom so you can move around. A mermaid tail like that is usually more of a hindrance when you’re walking around.
I think there are lots and lots of little girls who’ll love to run around in thick tights and this skirt during Carnival—and then in the summer, of course—and who’ll wish they had hair like Ariel.
Have you ever noticed how perfect Ariel the Mermaid’s hair always looks? No stringy hair disaster despite the “high humidity,” but with Disney, that’s no surprise :)
