Suggested discussion topics for the forum (no advertising threads)

Dear users and authors,
are there any topics you’d like to discuss in the forum? Materials, techniques, general topics?

There are already quite a few topics specific to crafts.
How about some very general topics? Vacations (destinations, activities, travel), movies, TV, the cinema....
That might liven up the chat corner a bit.

I think that’s probably just wishful thinking ;-)

Participation usually really isn’t very high, even though it could add such a personal touch.

Maybe some people don’t want to reveal their “human” side.... It’s a shame, since it could certainly be entertaining.

I can’t really comment on other forums since this is the only one I’m active on, and I’ve gotten a bit lazy about reading on Facebook ;-)... there’s just so much back-and-forth in some of those groups that I can’t be bothered with...

Well, why the two of us are (mostly) just chatting with Josefa here is a complete mystery to me!
The threads on all sorts of topics are pretty fun, though… like hairstyles, nail polish, leggings, etc...

I’m a little slow sometimes. :-) But right now I’m relaxing on the couch, my husband is cooking, and everything is wonderful... :-)

Topic request:
Tips on using a 4 mm crochet hook or larger for crocheters who normally only work with thin hooks.... You get three guesses what I’ve been struggling with for days

All I can say is: just grin and bear it. It’s the same as when someone switches from a thick hook to a thin one.
Personally, I don’t like those thin hooks at all. My favorite size is 3.5.
The other day I crocheted some hats with a size 8 hook. It felt like I had a tree trunk in my hand. ;-)

Hey, I try to join in and write as often as I can too :(
Right now, though, I’m a bit short on time to even stop by. I’m not in any other forum, and I don’t have Facebook or anything like that at all.

The day before yesterday I got superglue all over my hand because I wanted to glue the crochet hook back into the handle. But I hadn’t noticed that there were little holes at the bottom of the handle, and it all ran out and right into my hand. Still, the thick cardigan is almost finished now, and next up will be cushion covers with a thinner hook. (After Christmas) but I can’t go below size 2. Then my hands cramp up completely. Too thick isn’t nice either; the comparison with the tree trunk could have come from me.

for a long time I only crocheted with size 0.75, then I switched to amigurumi and 2.5 was a great leap.
Now I want to work with something thicker and I feel like I'm laying paving stones. Of course, it could also be because the hook doesn't have the grip my husband usually puts on it for me :-)

Every time I start, I definitely need 5 rows to get into it halfway, and on top of that I'm working with a gradient yarn cake....I do love thick wooden handles, but I just can't get along with the thick hook at all. So I hope it will settle down eventually, and that's most likely the reason why I don't like crocheting hats and things like that :-)

Hey Sabine, it’ll work out just fine, and then you’ll be surprised at how quickly it goes. I’m currently crocheting with a size 5 hook and the myboshi Flausch yarn that I love so much—it’s wonderful!

@Sabine 0.75??? I could never do that! I’m probably way too clumsy for that. I tried it once with a 1.25, but first of all, the yarn kept splitting, and second, I thought the hook might break (stainless steel)
I don’t think Tunisian crochet would be for you at all, would it? After all, you have to use a hook that’s 1–2 sizes larger for that....
So now I’m going back to my daily housework so I’ll have time to crochet again later.....

I’ve figured out my problem now ... after almost 60 cm in height ... Unfortunately, I crochet very tightly (usually), and I need to make sure to crochet more loosely ... it feels strange :-)

but I’m practicing and I’m not giving up hope

@Sabine: I agree with Nadeleule—I can’t even imagine 0.75. The thinnest hook I’ve ever crocheted with was 2.5, and the thickest was 10. It was great that the hat was finished so quickly.
But I mostly work with 3.5.

I crocheted yards and yards of lace with a 0.75, which is why I crochet this very tightly. Unfortunately, my eyes can’t handle that anymore. I’d need a watchmaker’s loupe in addition to my glasses.
I made my bags with a 3.5, and everyone was already laughing because I was cursing so much. And now I’m practicing, because then I want to crochet something with a 6–7—that’ll be fun :-)

strangely enough, I can do Tunisian crochet...but only with a size 3 hook :-)

a cake like that is always a bit different. Because of the plied yarn, crocheting can sometimes get pretty fiddly (I think).
I do prefer crocheting cakes rather than knitting them, though. I’m currently remaking an older knitted design (I want to revise the pattern) and chose a cake for it. And I really have to watch carefully to catch all the strands...

- Tips that aren’t in any book (e.g. very personal ways of holding yarn; washing; blocking; etc.)
- Recommendations for buying wool (sources, no advertising)
- Handicraft events (which markets are where and when)
- Why "should" you buy patterns here when you can download many patterns for free elsewhere?

So, that was my spontaneous "brainstorming"...

Well, I’d like a showcase thread on what you can make from textile yarn. I have a spool lying around and haven’t come up with any ideas yet.
