Crocheting to look like knitting?

Hi everyone! I just stumbled across this trend and can’t stop thinking about it… Crocheting that looks like knitting. So you crochet, but the finished piece ends up looking like it was knitted—stockinette stitches, that classic knitted look, no traditional crochet pattern. As always, I’m honestly torn. On the one hand, it appeals to me because I find crocheting much more relaxing than knitting, and if I can still achieve that look in the end, it sounds like the best of both worlds. On the other hand, I wonder if it’s a bit like cheating, or if the final piece ends up being twice as thick and heavy as a real knitted garment. Has anyone tried this themselves? I’d especially like to know how it wears—does it really drape as softly as a knitted piece, or can you tell that it’s actually crocheted? And if you have a favorite technique for this, can you tell me what you started with? I’d love to hear about your experiences. Best regards.

This is an interesting topic.
I think it’s a great option for people who only crochet but like the look of knitted items.
But I also wonder how much more yarn is used?
As we all know, crocheting uses up more yarn.

It would be too stiff for me to use in clothing.
But for anything that needs a certain amount of firmness and should be as dense as possible, I’d use the “knit stitch.”

This isn’t for me, since I can knit. So if I want a knitted look, I’ll knit—crocheting is a different story. But I can also imagine that it might end up too stiff; knitted items are, after all, looser and softer.

No, it doesn’t drape as loosely or feel as soft as stockinette stitch (which is the look it’s meant to mimic). It consists of single crochet stitches that use a different insertion point. So it ends up feeling about as firm as a piece made with single crochet. My impression is that it actually ends up even firmer.
And it also uses more yarn than knitting. I can’t say anything more specific about that because I decided against making clothes or scarves out of it. This pattern might be just right for baskets or bags.
Best regards, Karoline 💕

Hi everyone! Ohh, thank you so much! I see—in the end, only something that’s actually knitted feels like it’s knitted. Best regards. I wish you all a sunny weekend!

Hi Bianca!
Do you know how to do Tunisian crochet? There’s a knit stitch in Tunisian crochet, too. It has a nice, loose drape and is often used for clothing. It’s quick and easy to crochet.

Best regards
Silke
