Dear community,
what should you keep in mind if you want to knit for men?
This question was asked in the thread Knitting a sweater: tips?, and I’m opening a separate thread for it here.

I’m bumping this up again.

Pockets! Pockets in cardigans are incredibly important for men—at least for mine. That’s where everything a woman carries around in her handbag goes.
Woolly regards

I only knit socks for my husband—all that matters is getting the right size and making sure they aren’t too colorful 😄!

Before you even start planning, be sure to ask the man what kind of yarn, fit, color, and pattern he wants or would be comfortable with.
Yarn: Men don’t get cold as easily as women. That’s why thick yarns are usually less suitable. Exception: Sweaters or jackets that are specifically intended for outdoor use and winter temperatures.
Fit: Above all, clarify the sleeve shape and neckline. Raglan from the top doesn’t suit everyone, even if it might be the most comfortable option for the knitter. In my experience, set-in sleeves (don’t make the shoulders too wide!) or saddle shoulders work well for narrow shoulders.
Color: Subtle. Black, dark gray, navy blue, deep burgundy, or (less commonly) very dark fir green. No trendy colors, nothing that might stand out.
Pattern: If any, then subtle. Norwegian patterns with floats are a nightmare for many men because they often get caught in the threads. They’re simply quicker and less careful than women when getting dressed and undressed—you have to take that into account. Small cable patterns are better than large ones. Brioche stitch in thin yarn is also popular, but time-consuming to knit.
By the way, you’re almost always on the safe side if you reknit a well-worn favorite sweater as precisely as possible, but adjusted to the man’s current size. I’ve done this several times, including as a commission; it was always well received.

Many years ago, I had a funny experience in the waiting room of a doctor’s office.

A man was sitting in front of me wearing a knitted Westover in many colors.

I could see from the shoulder area that he had put it on backward. When he leaned forward to pick up a newspaper, all the loose ends were hanging down from the back.

I slipped him a note saying, “Your Westover is on the wrong way around.” He went to the restroom and came back having changed it—now with all the loose threads hanging down on his stomach. 😂😂😂

So, dear knitters, always sew a little label into men’s sweaters so they know which side is the back and which is the left.

After all, there are four different ways to put on a garment like this. How is a guy supposed to know that three of them are wrong?
