Dear users, dear authors,
Which yarn is (not) suitable for beginner knitters?

Yarn for beginners—it depends on what you want to knit. In any case, I’d advise against using fluffy yarn. It can’t be unraveled if you find a mistake and need to rip it out.

I’d advise against very thick yarn (needle size 10 and up). People always say you can finish projects especially quickly with it, but in reality, it’s much more tedious to pull five centimeters of yarn through a stitch than one centimeter.
And when do you ever actually get the chance to wear or use something that super-duper thick? The wind whistles right through super-thick hats and gloves. Most necks are too short for super-thick scarves, or your whole head just disappears inside them. And for larger pieces, you need the stamina of a weightlifter because they inevitably become incredibly heavy. Plus, the winter wind whistles right through thick cardigans, and they don’t fit under any coat.

I’d recommend well-twisted yarn and size 4–5 needles—that way you’ll make quick progress without ending up with stitches so large that the yarn slips through.

I consider yarns with fuzz, little hairs, or fringes unsuitable, since it’s hard to see the stitches clearly and count them, and they’re difficult or impossible to unravel if necessary—for example, angora or mohair.
I’d also advise against using wick yarn. It’s relatively easy to pierce through the thread, resulting in “thinner” stitches that can tear more easily if you don’t notice it—or don’t notice it in time—and correct it accordingly.

However, if someone is really struggling to get into a beginner-friendly project because they’ve already set their mind on something else, it often makes more sense to power through the project they want—knowing full well that it might be difficult—rather than forcing themselves through an unwanted beginner project.
