Ajour patterns are lace patterns. They look elegant, many resemble bobbin lace, and they’re often used for light, airy garments and accessories—for example in summer clothing and lace shawls. I think many knitters are a bit intimidated by them and assume they’re difficult to knit. But that’s actually not the case. The whole secret is that the pattern involves working yarn overs (for the little holes) and, to balance it out, you then have to decrease stitches—either by knitting stitches together or by working slip-stitch decreases. Usually, there’s a knitting chart for ajour patterns, or sometimes a row-by-row description. So you might need to be able to read a knitting chart, and the patterns usually require a little concentration at the beginning. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes really easy. Give it a try! Maybe start with a very small, simple pattern! It’s fun!

Openwork patterns look best when worked with fine to very fine yarn, as this best brings out the lightness of the pattern.

I love ajour, openwork, and lace patterns—I love the variety you can achieve with just a few stitches and yarn overs.
Basically, lace patterns are quite simple. You just have to be careful not to lose count.
It helps to cross off each row as you go in a knitting chart—that way, you won’t get confused. :-)
