A few years ago, I bought a small crocheted doily in Turkey.
The lady wanted 3.00 euros for it at the time.
I felt so embarrassed that I gave her 10.00 euros—and even that wouldn’t have covered the cost of just one of the little squares the doily is made of.
She had crocheted it with such a tiny hook and such extremely thin yarn.
My grandma used to crochet around handkerchiefs. The yarn was about the same as the one used for the Turkish doily.
Out of sheer curiosity, I tried to crochet one of those little squares using cotton yarn (LL 170m/50g) and a size 2.5 hook. I managed to do it, but just look at the difference in size.
Turkish women crochet beautiful things, and the love they put into them is priceless.
The crochet technique is the same as ours, but the yarn is so thin—I wouldn’t be able to work with it.
