I set up 2 Christmas nativity scenes with handmade nativity figures every year. In one of them (in the living room), the figures were shaped from self-hardening modeling clay and then painted and varnished. It is already over 40 years old, and when my grandchildren were smaller, I was always afraid they would break the figures when playing with them.
So I made the second nativity scene, with crocheted nativity figures. Nothing can happen to those, and it was played with very enthusiastically. Now it stands in my entryway during the Christmas season and is still played with and admired. The figures are about 10 cm tall, making them the ideal size for playing without taking up too much space. I was able to crochet all the figures with leftover yarn, because you only need a very small amount of yarn for 1 figure.
Would you like to have a nativity scene like this with handmade figures too? Then take a look through your yarn stash and get started right away!
It’s best to begin with the basic set, which you can surely finish easily by Christmas:
Holy Family with poinsettia, ox, and donkey.
As the first expansion, I recommend the shepherd scene:
3 shepherds, sheep, and Christmas angel
And last but not least, the Three Wise Men with their exotic animals:
The Three Wise Men with their gifts and the animals: camel, elephant, and horse
Do you think this is a huge project and too much all at once? Take your time—it doesn’t all have to be finished this year! Start small and add the figures little by little! You can always pause in between. You’ll see, this is an imaginative project that will bring you lots of joy: first while crocheting and later when setting it up!
