Holiday: German Unity Day

Dear users and authors,
today is German Unity Day. It is a national holiday throughout Germany. What are your thoughts on this? This question is, of course, directed at all readers. Users and authors who do not live in Germany are also welcome to share their opinions. 

I’m very torn on this, because there are two sides to it.
When I consider how the political situation has developed—especially in the east—I don’t necessarily see a reason to celebrate this day.

I see it like Marlene; I hardly see any reason to celebrate as such, or none at all

Well, I suppose you could celebrate reunification, especially when one part of the country really wasn’t entirely free. It probably depends a lot on your generation as to how—or whether—it affects you.
I grew up with two German states, so at first I didn’t really care; it was just the way things were. But my grandmother had several sisters “over there,” and they weren’t able to see each other for a very long time—that was really hard on her.
People in their mid-thirties today (and younger) have never known anything else—that there’s only the Federal Republic of Germany now (or again)—and they listen to the stories of their parents and grandparents. In that sense, a reason to celebrate is probably slowly fading for most people.
It’s been so long since the Wall came down that I don’t think today’s political developments have much to do with it. Right now, you can see that the shift to the right is happening in the West as well—and not just in the Federal Republic of Germany; it’s causing quite a stir across Europe. And I don’t even want to think about Trump running for office again....

Yes, for people who were separated by the Wall back then, it was certainly good that they came back together.
However, the people behind the Wall were not shown what it is like to suddenly have more opportunities and no longer have to vote for “the only existing party.”
But rather to have the opportunity to choose from several parties.

There are some great people from that region.
I know some myself.
