Dear users, dear authors,
How would you define “basic skills” for beginners in handicrafts? What do you absolutely need to know about each type of handicraft to even get started?
For me, basic knowledge of crocheting would include chain stitches and single crochet stitches—you can already try out quite a few things with those.
When it comes to knitting, I’d start with casting on stitches and distinguishing between knit stitches and purl stitches; that’s enough to do a lot.
Anyone who wants to take up sewing but has never used a sewing machine should definitely seek advice at a specialty store, try out several machines, and listen to what the machines *tell* them. If there’s no other way to learn, it would also be a good idea to take a sewing class, and they should start with simple projects rather than attempting a ball gown or something similar right off the bat—that’s guaranteed to be a disaster and will end in frustration. Simple straight seams, like those on a pillow or placemats, are a good place to start. With jersey fabric, I recommend practicing a bit first to get used to the fabric’s stretch. Videos on YouTube are also very helpful. Take it slow—after all, it’s not for nothing that sewing is a skilled trade requiring at least three years of training.
Unfortunately, not everyone is as talented as our Ina here :-)
when it comes to patchwork, the most important thing is to love your project. Nothing is worse than struggling with beginner projects you don’t enjoy because the pattern you love is supposedly too difficult.
If your heart says yes, then you’ll manage just fine with needle and thread (Yes, you can actually sew by hand in patchwork... ;-) )
Alternatively, an inexpensive, used sewing machine is also enough to get started with patchwork, since you only need straight seams. Almost all machines can handle that.
You’ll learn the rest over time...
As a beginner, I sewed a pattern that I later found out was “way too hard” for beginners (Y-seams). Luckily, no one had told me that beforehand. :-)
Okay, some of the seams were crooked—so what? I loved the quilt, and that’s what helped me see it through to the end.
For basic skills in Tunisian crochet, you should know how to cast on and cast off stitches and how to crochet the basic stitch.
With that, you’re already ready for simple projects.
If you also know the standard stitches—knit stitch, full stitch, purl stitches, and reverse stitch—you can pretty much tackle anything.
