gradient yarn

Dear users, dear authors,
what’s the deal with these gradient yarns? Are there any alternatives for creating a beautiful gradient on your own if you don’t have any ready-made gradient yarn on hand?

Gradient wool is available from a great many manufacturers. Some gradients are short, while others are nice and long. You can make short gradients yourself really well with Easter egg dye, for example.

The long ones are very labor-intensive to produce; that can almost only be done by machine. But you can also make this kind of gradient yourself by, for example, knitting the undyed wool into a tube, “painting” it, and then unraveling the tube again after dyeing, setting, and drying. Then the skein has to be washed and dried again so the wool becomes smooth again.
It’s similar with what is known as “ball dyeing.”

A current trend is the wound “Bobbel,” which consist of individual strands, usually a blend of 50% cotton and 50% acrylic. They are unwound from individual cones and can be made with any number of strands.
The Bobbel are plied in parallel, which means the strands are not twisted together (plied) but lie next to each other.
This requires a bit more attention when knitting / crocheting, but you get used to it fairly quickly.

I really enjoy crocheting with hand-dyed yarn—it often has a gradient that’s more or less pronounced, and I can have the yarn custom-dyed to my liking.

Otherwise, I’ve also crocheted with two skeins of very similar colors one after the other, for example, for a loop scarf.

I think you could also imitate a color gradient by crocheting with two strands of similar shades at the same time, such as medium blue and dark blue. That should also create a beautiful color effect.

Imitating a color gradient—I actually have a project like that lying around here, too. Four colors (black, red, orange, yellow) are worked with two strands: black-black, black-red, red-red, red-orange, orange-orange, and so on.

I’m planning to make a thick winter jacket... but it’s just way too warm for that right now.
