Hello to all you older crocheters out there. About 50 years ago, my friend’s mother used to crochet triangular shawls all the time—as far as I can remember, they consisted entirely of chain stitches. She used very thin, slightly fluffy yarn. The shawls were as light as a feather, could be made in any size, and could be worn either as a shawl draped over the shoulders or as a scarf tied in a knot. Beautiful!
But I was more of a knitter myself and, unfortunately, wasn’t interested in the pattern at all. Does anyone happen to know what I’m talking about? My friend’s mother was from the former GDR—maybe the pattern was developed there. Thank you so much for your help!
Hi Nina,
thank you so much for your quick reply. Long live the internet! I’d also asked on another platform, and there—at least I think so—they mentioned the same pattern. It’s square, but I’ll just give it a try. Of course, I’ll check out your tip, too. My friend’s mother used to make only these shawls back then. And the 1970s sounds about right—though in my memory, it was more like the early to mid-1960s. I’m curious to see how it goes. Thanks again!
Best regards
that reminds me of the shawl made with Celtic love knots. Those are elongated chain stitches that are connected to each other... light as air. Just type it into Google, and you’ll find lots of pictures.
Hi Nici, thanks so much for the tip, but unfortunately that’s not it. That said, the shawls with that knot are absolutely gorgeous, as I saw on Google. I think I’ll make a few more shawls this year. Once my family sees them, they’ll be lining up for them. Thanks again and best regards
It’s a triangular shawl made of chain loops. That’s what you mean, right?
They were made from mohair. It’s lightweight and a little fuzzy. That gives it a slightly different look and makes it even lighter.
Hi, thank you so much for your reply, but that’s not it. I’ll remember that saying about wool—I hadn’t heard it before. Thanks to ZwergnasenBaer Nina, I found the pattern and have already started. I’m really proud of myself because I’m more of a knitter than a crocheter.
Thanks again, and have a wonderful Sunday
